eating food off the streets..

i was wondering what i could do to teach my dog to stop eating scraps of food off the streets. since he was a pup to 9 months i use to grab the trash out of his mouth. any advice??

Enforce the "leave it" command, start by making him sit, while you are preparing his food. Do not let him eat, until he has sat for a suitable ammount of time, while giving the "leave it" command. I have used it, simply to reinforce that dinner time is when I say it is, and I'm the pack leader, however it would work in your situation as well. It doesnt take but a few weeks before you can fill the bowl with fresh meat, give the leave it command, walk out of the room, and come back in minutes later to the dog staring at the bowl...but hasnt touched a bite.
