View Full Version : What sort of work does your dog do?

As we all know, the APBT is a breed with great work ethic. So what I'm curious about, with the constant talk of conditioning and such on here and other boards, what work do you do with your dog?

I am not counting conformation, nor playing ball endlessly. I'm talking weight pull, hunting, bitesport, agility, competative obedience, etc. I just love seeing dogs who were meant to work actually doing the work!! So post up some pics and tell everyone what work your dogs do, how they keep the work ethic of the breed alive and well.

Is it that no one wants to be the first to reply? I'll kick it off, but I DON'T have an APBT so it isn't really what I'm looking for:

My Greyhound, Wally, is a retired racer. I take great pride in his working history and he gets back on the track once a year for a fun run. Here is his ped and his racing history. I'm pretty bummed he has no offspring because I would love to see some of them race. http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?d=wallcloud

My pit bull/Akita mix, Mike Hunt, is being trained for a bunch of stuff. We are working on competative obedience, weight pull, agility, and personal protection (competition, not backyard style BS). I have only been working with him for a few months so we're not that far along, but look for us to start competing this summer!

Alright, now you go!!

My dogs work anywhere from drag weighting to running on a mill to weight pulling. Also I have springpole setup on every chain spot.

We of course go running, and play fetch and do hurdles, and hills and all the basics... if i had access to a body of water we would swim regularly... bat as is its really sporadic.
he loves it though and thats all that matters to me... has the will and the drive I just give him the opportunity.

Hey I started it, I answered it, and I don't have a pit bull of any sort!

How is Diesel liking Schutzhund?LOVES it. I mean a lot. he took to it like a fish to water. these are pics from his first time actually. we have since been to a few session and are working our way into a established SCH club that is here.

He surprised me and completely blew the trainers mind at his natural skill. It was great, it made me bust with pride to hear people bragging on him and what not. We do a lot of tug work and that is what they use to get dogs started. So he was of course all over that part. so we moved him up to this big fat burlap tug and again he was all over it... we let the dogs rest a while and then he suggested we give him a shot at the sleeve. He wasnt sure what he would do with it but even a half-hearted bite would be progress... as you can see he gave a great full mouth bite and really let him have it by shaking and puling his heart out. He released the sleeve and i praised him like crazy!! I was of course very excited.
If you look in the pics you can see a gun in the decoys hand as he found taht diesel was completely unphased by the stich or the craking of the whip... he used the started pistol to try and throw him off. On a very long send The gun was litter detterant as he closed the gap quickly and hit the decoy hard and shook him wagging his tail the entire time. It was great!!!

I am going to really persue a title for him because he does really enjoy the training and the work. We are going to work training all winter and try to start competeing mid-late spring.

My current dog is a mutt but I've trained her fairly well in basic commands. We're working on agility. If I had the money we'd be enrolled in a class and competing by now. Plus, she'd have her CGC.

When/if I get my own kennel going, I will definitely have my dogs working on the flirt pole, mills, spring pole, and pulling chains. I'd also like to compete in conformation, weight pulling, hang time, treadmill racing, and tug of war at some shows. Maybe flyball, agility, tracking, obedience, or something else as well, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to devote enough time into any of that with so many other things going on, lol.

Redhead is a Communist. He insists that when Communism arrives, dogs will be able to sleep on beds, eat whatever they want, and jump on humans and chase cats to their hearts' content.

Redhead also claims that, because I do not permit him these pleasures, I am a "capitalist" and an "exploiter" of his labor.

"But Redhead, you dumb dog! How can I exploit your labor when you don't do any work?" He wasn't sure what to say to that. Apparently, the Revolutionary Committee will get back to him with an ideologically appropriate Marxist-Leninist answer.

I hunt wild game, track, swim, play drag the handicapped old soldier down the road, some showing here and there, catching game competitions ( not in a fence), kill rodents, and coyotes and the sort.

Well, my dog is retired but he did do obedience. He is CGC/TDI and has done some training towards his CD. The thing with him is that he can behave himself around other dogs, but its VERY stressful for him so I decided to forgo competing for a CD for that reason.

Loki competes in weight pull when we're able to find a UKC pull close enough. That's been an ongoing thing since she was a year old. (We started with IWPA, but finished the top title in her first 3 pulls, so I didn't see the point of continuing.) She trained up for her novice obedience title, and we're thinking about going farther later on. Agility next year. (I don't have any obedience or agility pics yet, but here are a few weight pull pics from the UKC Nationals.)

MY DOG IS NOT A FAG! he is a good heterosexual pit bull who knows the difference between a "bone" and a "toy".

That said, the Revolutionary Committee got back with an answer. Apparently, in spite of the fact that Redhead does no discernable work, I must be exploiting his doggy labor because according to Marx's surplus value of labor theory, I would have no reason to feed my dog if I were not getting more benefit out of him than the value of his food.

The difference between the value of his food and the value I receive from his "labor" is the extent to which Redhead is exploited. So goes the theory.

So I responded that accoding to that logic, Redhead must in fact be exploiting me, since he performs his non-existent labor in exchange for valuable food items, like beef and fish and milk and yogurt and lamb and fruit and vegetable juices.

I should be the one who demands a revolution. That, and I intercepted his letters to his mother. That is another story for another day.

3 of them do Therapy work I honestly don't have the time to do more than that or I'd certify my others. In the org I work with you can't just get the certification and let it sit there you have to work the dog and show proof of it. Eventualy as I retire one another will take over doing the work most likely

Agility

Obedience

Samurai has also done some tracking, but my inexperience in that area is why I haven't done much with it.

I'd also love to get into weight pull
