Is it ok to give a 3 month old a PIG EAR?
I got a couple and wanted to make sure there wasnt any problem with giving it to him before I did this. I would give it to him supervised. Is there any reason that I shouldnt give him one or any precautions that I need to worry about.
Just want to be safe is all.
Thanks

if it was my pup i would say no. they might give him the runs ect.
I guess it depends. I have given my "kids" pig ears before w/ no ill effect. Once chewed they become soft & digestable. But as shady said I would not give too many at one time as it may give them the runs. But one as a chewy every now & then should be fine.

I don't give my dogs pigs ears or non-pressed rawhides. In fact, I don't give Mike any rawhides at all. Many dogs won't chew it well enough so they can't digest it, and in most cases it comes back up, and in the worst cases it causes a blockage. It just depends on how you feel about doing it as to if you want. The pup will probably get diarrhea if it's isn't used to having lots of different stuff in the diet.
Personally I err on the side of caution with that stuff. Instead of a pig's ear I'd go with a stuffed and frozen kong.

my dogs always get the pig ears caught in thier throats or stuck to the top of thier mouth so I dont let them have them no more.
IMHO, it's basically garbage with a high level of fat, and yeah, causes the runs pretty good too.
not really necessary to give to a dog, I don't think. they have absolutely no nutritional value, and like raw hide they harbor nasty bacteria, and can cause bacterial infections if just left around, unfinished. salmonella, ring a bell?.....
I personally don't give them. jmo

Actually skin and hair is not digestible. Dead keratinized epithelium can't be digested by animals that is why it is always defecated out and looks the same. Dogs can also choke to death on raw hides and pig ears. I only give raw bones from when I butcher, or get from a butcher up town.

I myself personally blessedly have had no problem w/ pig ears. No runs, no choking & no icky leftovers. Maybe I was lucky.
The only problem I ever had was when one of my dogs almost choked to death on part of a knuckle bone. Thankfully I was there to fish it out, which is another example of why one should not leave a dog unattended w/ any kind of chewie.

I notice that I have less problems from raw bones than those commercialized bones. I don't even know what they do to those things but they are devoid of any thing useful and stink.

They do. I got most of my bones raw from a butcher. That's the best way to go if you can, but one must still be careful handling them as they can carry germs as well.

Tried them with my dog when he was a small pup and it got stuck in his throat, that was it for them.
Tried them with my dog when he was a small pup and it got stuck in his throat, that was it for them.Truth be told ANYTHING can get stuck in a pup's/dog's throat. For example, I had a knuckle bone get stuck in one of mine. Someone else had a pig ear. You had a raw bone. Greenies are awful, as it raw hide. We could have gotten a kong get stuck in a dog's throat after she shredded the kong into pieces, but we were watching her & took the pieces away.
We don't get bones any more b/c of the near choking experince. Plus, they are messy & unsanitary. I say the most durable thing is a filled black kong. Nylabones are good too as long as you get the one for super chewers.
I also like busy balls. They're not for chewing, but instead are a ball the dog has to bat around to figure out how to get kibble out of. But again that is NOT a chew toy. I just like using them (supervised of course) to simulate the dog's mind.
The other day I gave him a small piece of pig ear and he seemed to do ok, no diarreah or anything like that, it was supervised and he didnt choke or anything. He really loved it too. I dunno *shrug

I say the best thing u can do is get into the sport of hunting. With just a few deer u can have raw bones stored in the freezer that will last u a very long time and in the summer give it to the dog straight from the freezer, its like a popsicle for dogs lol my dog loves it.
Another reason why not to feed rawhide is the choking hazard plus pig ears can actually be bad for ur dogs teeth. Raw bones are the best to give because as the dog chews on it the bone scrapes the tar and other stuff off ur dogs teeth to keep them healthy.
Damn ur in Missouri too, dude if u don't want to hunt ill gladly come out there and hunt those monster bucks u got running around in the midwest
i could easily get deer bones during deer season. I will consider saving some next time ;) I didnt have a dog to save for last season.
Interesting about the "not good for teeth comment when talking about pig ears...cause everything i read says it is good for a dogs teeth...

I give them to my pup. She never get diarrhea and chews them up fine. Just give them out in moderation. Plus it helps on her not chewing the furniture all to hell.

the thing about pig ears not being good for teeth is that most of the time the ears are smoked or have some additives that can stain ur dogs teeth, trust me i know thats why my dog doesn't get them anymore.
