I honestly would not think that a catahoula's description would fit "small, wirey dog w/spots, small wirey pit", keep searching, they are not small dogs. Well, mayby compared to a Great Dane they are small!! Ones around here are larger than a pit.

Maybe your friends dog was a mix or was not full grown
unforunately some people are mixing Catahoula Leopard Dogs with APBTs and calling them Merle pit UUUGH
Catahoula Leopard Dogs have very different temperaments than pits IMO

yes they do.....
unforunately some people are mixing Catahoula Leopard Dogs with APBTs and calling them Merle pit UUUGH*SIGH* I hate to have to say this yet again for what seems like the millionth time ... not ALL merle pits are mixed. Yes, SOME are, but not ALL are.
Should anyone wish to discuss the issue of merle APBTs, please PM me. This has been debated many times on this board before & I do not want this thread to get hi-jacked by a well-worn subject.
I have owned merle pit bulls for almost 10 years now (and yes, I call my merles pit bulls, as I have yet to come across any evidence my dogs are to the contrary) & I have studied & continue to study the merle allele. I will be happy to discuss the subject, but again PM or e-mail only please.
Back to newbietrutlepits question. The dog you were thinking of newbie, may have possibly been a Catahoula Cur. Catahoula Cur is another name for the Catahoula Leopard Dog (CLD) but it is also a catch-all term for a dog that is a cross of between a CLD & a cur breed. Some examples of cur bred "Catahoula Curs" are the CLD x Blackmouth Cur, the CLD x Mountain Cur, etc.
Here is a pic of a Black Mouth Cur:

Here is a pic of a Mountain Cur:
http://www.gotpetsonline.com/pictures-gallery/dog-pictures-breeders-puppies-rescue/mountain-cur-pictures-breeders-puppies-rescue/pictures/mountain-cur-0003.jpg
Should either of these cur breeds be crossed to a CLD it may produce a dog that looked like the dog you saw.
And just in case anyone wonders, the only reason I know about Catahoula Curs is b/c I saw some adverts for them on cur boards.
Hope this helps!

some where between the moutain cur and my lil red dog in the pic in gallery should fit what he had .... maybe gonna have to find him.. i think that he hunted deer with that lil dog and a crossbow (thus his nick crossbow) or could be he had a runt perhaps of the catahoula leopard dog and didnt tell me she was small because of it.. i know swampdog kennels had the monster sized dogs and one got sick as a puppy and didnt grow much more than a jack russel even tho the parents were the near eighty pound variety of dog ...i wont call them pits .. swampdog kennels now has turned to bully dogs and american bulldogs dont think they do pits much

there is no way a Catahoula cur could be considered a small wirey pitbull looking dog, unless the pitbulls your used to weigh 120 pounds!! Which I highly doubt, as she has said her dogs are smaller than 30#. I have been around them since a youngster, and still am, as they make great bay dogs, They do not look like pitbulls, they have more of a hounddog structure to them. Now, one bred to a bulldog, maybe, but not a purebred. And if a cat was bred to a black mouth, in case you are about to say that, they both have the same skeletal structure, and could not take the appearance of a "small wirery pitbull".

she may have been a mix , someday i may find this fella again and see
what the dern dog was..think he said was a rare breed... all those breeds
seem to remind me of the named he called it but this is one mystery im just
gonna stay perplexed over..
my current dogs still hovering in the 22 pd range yes , im letting their bodies
grow as they may.. one is growing a bit taller now at 17 inch shoulder height

By the description u gave, ur friends dog sounds like maybe a patterdale terrier, possibly mixed with something. The patterdale's come in red and have sort of wirey fur and are farely small, and some may resemble an apbt in some way. But my best guess is that ur friends dog is a mix of somesort, a lot of hunters mix different breeds to achieve exactly what they are looking for in a hunting dog, so its quite possible that his dog is mixed with many breeds.
