What can be used to deter dogs from chewing on wood fences as well as digging under them or simply just blocking them from doing either?

Normally I use bitter apple. However a wooden fence is allot of surface area. In that case maybe a hot wire would be more suitable. They will only try it once or twice and stay the hell away from it after that. I do admit I have a retarded dog it seems and she got mad at mine and tried to pull it down. I had it on intermitant and every time it hit her she would yipe and let go then hit it again. So I flipped the switch and she nailed it one more time and she didn't want any more of it after she was knocked silly from the 240 jolt. I have touched it a few times it isn't funny. I was able to take it down after a while. We used to put bleach on our garbage to keep foxes, raccoons, oppossumes, wild dogs and bear out of our trash cans. Maybe spraying it on the grass just in front of the fence would work the same. I wouldn't spray it on the fence as it would surely change the color of the wood. I don't know if you can get bitter apple by the gallon but I do know dogs hate that taste. Me too. I have gotten it on my hands and put a peice of gum in my mouth and it taste really dang bad.

I am glad to see that I am not the only member of the "I wonder how that feels" group.

I'll look into both but where should I start looking for the bitter apple and how long does it last on a surface?

Most pet stores have the bitter apple spray but I've only seen it in the small spray bottles you might be able to order a larger bottle or even a gallon from jeffers or j-b pet.

I'll try if it isn't too costly, but is sounds like it may be worth it as long as my son don't get ahold of it.

It wont hurt your son. It will scare the crap out of him and he will cry but it wont hurt him. He will probably only do it once. Kids are pretty darn smart to that kind of stuff. You will be too. It is something that isn't pleasant but it isn't going to kill you. My half brother pee'd on mine once while visiting (city boy lived with the mother) now I believe that probably did hurt. And I laughed nearly to the point of tearing a lung. Dude was one pissed off MF. He tried to come after me for talking him into pissing on that post as I told him it was a pissing post. lol. But his walk was all messed up and I just stepped away from that big doofis. 6'4'' 300 pounds of him. I just step it out and make jabs at him and he winds out fast and falls down like a dead fish. I am afraid he will have a heart attack one day so I don't mess with him any more. I think he is only 33 or 34 something like that. Can't remember if he was born in 73 or 74 I was there but that was a long time ago and we didn't live in the same house for long as kids. I was gone by the time he was 4 or 5. Anyway. I am willing to bet he wont touch it if you tell him no. and if he does he will not do it twice. Unless he is like me and does it for a rush. lol

One time when I was 7 or 8, my parents were having a bbq with some friends and their children. well we wanted to play baseball in the front yard. I knew better than to touch that wire but the other little ones didnt. Well first base was the old oak tree, second was the fence post, and third was the corner of the porch. well we get to playing and one of the other kids hits the ball and gets a double. well he cant seem to figgure out what second base is supposed to be. so being the oldest kid I go and tell him, "look, its that wire in the middle." And did you know he went and grabbed that damn wire, closed fist. He starts to yellin' and his old man has to come and pull him off that wire. well right behind his old man is mine. and he aint too happy. needless to say I got my @$$ whipped for that one. That was fun...:D

Then a few years later....

I was about 12 or 13. It was my best friend and I on my go-kart. We were riding in the cow pasture, cause dad didnt want us tearing up his grass. well let me back up a bit. we had to unhook the hot wire, pass through, and then hook the wire back because the cows were close. So we go on and do our thing and are coming back home. well I was driving and I forgot we had hooked the wire back and was coming in full throttle. just before we got to the wire i had passed in some cow crap and it flew on both of us, so i wasnt paying much attention, and was looking to the side when we hit that wire.
it caught me right between my chin and my lower lip, the wire broke and we kept goin but not after it shocked the hell out of us. I stopped that go-kart and started rolling on the ground (must have thought i was on fire), my dad comes out of the back yard killing himself laughing, he said i should have paid closer attention, and i should have.
Ended up with a burn mark on my face and knot in the back of my head, from the roll bar, and a life time of memories. My friend didnt get it bad at all, he was taller than me and he caught it right across the chest.
now a days if something like that happens the parents wanna come and sue the crap out of ya. We were just some good ole counrty boys doing what boys do, thats all. it was all in good fun...

So I really wouldn't worry about him touching the wire, and if he does it will give him something to tell his kids about when he gets older. I hit that wire many times and i turned out alright......:)
