So a buddy of mine calls me today, he's got this collie that he's had forever.. damn dog is somewhere around 15 years old, named Duke. Well a little while back they noticed he had a lump. I believe it was on his belly, but they took him to the vet and the vet told them he had a tumor and needed surgery. Well Duke has been in declining health or a while now, and so they told the vet they just wanted to have him put down. Well my buddy claims the vet refused to put him down.. I don't know if this is true, but its his story. Anyhow.. they don't have the stomach/heart to do it themselves, so they want me to come do it. So I am kinda torn... Should I do it.. or should I try and talk to the vet about it or what?

The answer is a big no. Not in a billion years should you do their dirty work. I know of no vet that would refuse to do it unless it was uncalled for. I wonder more if it was they didn't want to pay the fee to do it. At any rate of looking at it they should put their own pet down if that is what they have desided to do. If you do it you're liable for the deed, also you have to live with it. Nope let them use their own gun and feed it one last time pet on him and look him in the eyes and do their own dirty work. He ain't got a hair on his ass if he don't. No one needs a yellow bellied friend to put shit work on ya.

I've never in my life heard of a vet refusing to PTS an animal especially one who dying & possibly suffering. However, I'm sure that's not the only vet around. You can shoot him, but it's your call. Personally, I'd just find another vet. There's a vet on almost every corner where I'm at.

See thats why I asked.. because the whole thing about the vet refusing to put him down is what threw me off. This guy is a friend, but he's not a guy I'd lay down in traffic for.. know what I mean? But anyway.. think I'll tell him he'll have to do it himself if he wants it done.

I think telling him to do his own deed is best. I also firmly believe it is the wisest idea too. There just is something not right about his story.

If your friend never culled any animal, I doubt he has the stomach to send his dog over the rainbow himself, I culled many puppies, but to tell you the truth I dont think i would have the heart to put down my grown dog , that lived with me for many years. NOt to long ago my dad took his neo mastiff to the vet , they told him he was he had an advanced heart murmer, and even if they did operate and try to save him, he would be in pain and meds all of his life, so my dad decided to put him down, they were asking a redicoulous price to put his dog down, so he took the vets paper work that stated his dog was terminally ill, and went to the local humane society and they put his neo to sleep for free......................

i agree with attilla you tell him to man up grow a pair, and do it himself.sounds to me like your friend found out how much it costs to put the dog to sleep, and said no way.you tell him this is your dog,he has given you 15 years of love and service, and you owe it to him to either pay to have the dog put down or grow a pair and do it your self.
