I thought "Betas" were known as Siamese fighting fish, it might of been Vietnamese, not sure. Either way, I've only heard rumors they actually fight, and I cant imagine what a fish fight would look like. I know when in tank alone, and you put a mirror up to the glass, they get violent, but I've never seen two Betas going at it, no matter how many are in a tank.
There might be others, I dont know to be honest. Fighting fish, I think I'll believe it when I see it. HA!

I've had betas before. The first two we got were both males, and we didn't know they'd fight. Apparently neither did the pfk at the pet store cuz he didn't tell us. It was something to see. They pretty much just ram into each other full force over and over again, and rip fins off. Eventually, one of them died, probably from internal bleeding. Me and some friends of mine went in on some pirhana some years back. Nothing we put in the tank with them stood a chance, until we put a small mouth bass I caught in the Mohawk River in there, lol. He held his ground in that tank with them for a good two or three weeks before they finally overpowered him.

oh don't worry they fight, in my younger dumber years i would go to petco and dump one beta in a cup with another beta and they would go at it. One day i actually bought 2 of them and put them in a bowl together well they fought for a good week before one actually died. By the end neither fish had any fins left its crazy, but i guess u can consider them game too huh, cause they definately fight to the death.

well i have seen the fish your describing but i have never kept any,but i have and still do keep betta fish.but not the kind you get in the pet store with the long fancy fins.some of them might fight but they are not fighting fish.the ones i keep and test are from asia and they look totally diffrent from what your used to seeing mine dont have the long fins they have real short fins and they are not in all the fancy colors they are a little smaller and they ususally come in just the basic earth colors like browns and such but some come in blues and reds i have both colors but mainly you see the earth colors.my fish are the wild betta fish that they catch in the rice patties and such in asia and those are the ones that they fight and stage matches against over there not the real bright colored ones with the huge fins.mine will fight at the drop of a hat but the trick is you have to keep them seperate with dividers around them so they cant see the others you keep, this way they dont get used to fish and lose the desire to fight, see after a while they figure they cant get at the other fish because they get used to trying to fight them from their containers you keep them in and they cant get at each other so they figure whats the point.here is a picture of the fancy one that your used to seeing.and the other short finned fish is like what i own.as you can see there is a big diffrence, and it isnt only in the looks it is in fighting ability as well.http://z.about.com/d/freshaquarium/1/8/J/F/fw4071.jpg http://www.plakatthai.com/clipart/butterfly1.jpg (http://www.plakatthai.com/clipart/butterfly1.jpg)

That's some interesting stuff there Tex. I did not know there were different sub-species of betas. The ones I had were the fancy looking pet store versions, but they did fight.

I ahd like 8 of them but my best one was gojilla. he would thump his head on the edge of the glass constantly. he was nuts to fight other fish lol

yeah they are some good fighting fish,i got me 2 dozen of em right now.i dont know if it is illegal to match fish or not but i like to watch em scrap a little.i usually just put em in a clear 5 gallon water jug like you get at the store,i bought mine and cut the top off of it and that way you can watch em wrestle and get em in and out real easy.they are damn interesting fish, but i like the fighting variety over the show variety.

This brings back memories when I was young I use to always buy bettas to fight with my friends we had all kinds from the fan tails to the king bettas we use to match em acording to size. We condition them in a 10 gallon aquarium using a mirror for them to follow. The only boring part is that some betta matches could go on for days lol......
