View Full Version : Can you get her to walk!??
My 4 MO female just DOES NOT WALK ON THE LEASH! She has her nose to the ground THE WHOLE TIME.
She also is always walking BEHIND me, instead of in front of me like most dogs. It is so annoying, it makes me not even want to go out for walks with her. I know I am being impatient, but I really need to get her to start walking normal.
Put it this way, a walk around my block takes me (alone) about 3-4 minutes. A walk with Mia takes about 15-20 minutes. Also, if she isn't walking behind me, she's pulling to the side of me.
Any advice, someone help please:confused:

Being patient is KEY.:) So, although it's easy to get frustrated and annoyed, TRY to be upbeat and happy, as your girl will pick up "ques" from you.
I would recommend that you start indoors with a leash on her. She's young and at this age food/treats can work wonders at becoming a great motivator. Walk a few feet with her on the leash, coax her with a treat, if necessary and when she does well, praise her heavily for doing a job well done. Extend that. Go a few more feet. Have her learn the sit command while she's attached to her leash. A gentle upwards tug, and an easy push to her rear end SHOULD get her to sit. When she learns this, again, be big with the praise. Practice this around your house until you know that she understands what you're trying to teach her to do. Then, go outside, to an area with few distractions. Repeat the whole process again. Get her to go a few feet, then stop. Sit command. When she does it=by gentle persuassion from you, big praises. Make a big deal out of her accomplishments. Focus on the postive and don't get angry if she slips up. IMO, positive reinforcement training works FAR better than negative. Dogs, by nature WANT to please their owners. Then extend the "walk" and see how she does with some distance added. Praise, praise, praise her. Make the whole experience fun and exciting for you and her. Walking is a GREAT way to bond with your dog. I will include some links for you to check out as well.
Just remember to be patient, and if you find yourself acting otherwise, end the "session". Good luck!
also, "she has her nose to the ground" because what she's smelling is like a story to her. She can tell what dog was there, when, etc. Once she learns how to properly walk, you "do your thing" and then let her, do hers. She's just checkin out the neighborhood. I walk with "my" time, and then the dogs get theirs.

I use to put the leash on Smokey and let him drag in around all day. It would get him use to having something strapped and tied to his neck. eventualy he got use to the leash and would let me take him on walks. You also might want to take treats with you on walks. Give alot of positive reinforcement never fuss. YOU MUST BE PATIENT..... Never fuss at the pooch....
you'll will get enough of that later on.....goood luck

first,,he is only 4 mos old,,he is just a baby,,u want to make if fun for him,,,I think its great he dosen't want to walk infront of u,,have him walk beside u,,give him treats when he is beside you,,hold the treat high enough so he holds his head up when he walks,,he will learn,,its all about consitancy,,they learn by repetition,,be patient,,,training dogs is the only time I recomend a fanny pack to hold dog treats,,other then that its very unfashionable,,I wear it on the side I want the dog to walk on,,then they stay glued to my side,,waiting for my hand to get them a treat.

I know it is a pain in the ass but you have to just keep walking. But right now you have an option of training that dog to pull. As you want the dog to walk behind you on its own accord. One benifit. You don't have to break him of pulling before you walk. But if you don't want to pull just keep walking he will either come along after a few times of being persistant or get drug for a bit. Either way he will give soon. only once did I have a dog that didn't work out like that but it was an exwife and I was dragging her through the woods to the creek. Cheaten whore.

Thanks. My dad said he trained our doberman that way too, but lots of people are also telling me "no never pull or tug on them", but it seems like other things arent working so I'm going to have to give it a try.
LoL they cheat, they hit the creek

Yeah I'm thinking it's also because she's so young and the world is basically still new to her. HOpefully she catches on easier to commands as she grows up and gets more mature.
