what do you all think? My soon to be ex elected to try and break into my house last night, yes the aptly named poodle boy-thanks attila-and when he stuck his leg through the window, SQuirt bit him on the leg. I had just walked in because of all the commotion of her barking and g rowling, which she has never done before, when it happened. I am not upset and think she was a good dog. He called the police on his cell, and the officer, another pit bull owner, said that
she is not vicious, and was just doing what any good dog would do. then he took him off to jail. I have no idea what he was trying to do, and am glad she alerted me to his presence and bit him. I think he will twice the next time he decides to do something so stupid. I do not think she is HA, rather just being protective. what do you think?

maybe even to big stecks i mean i hope it never happens to any one but it would be a comfy feeling knowing that your dog has your back inside the house like that

Dogs can pick up on things we can not. They know when people have good intentions, or bad intentions based on smells and body compositions we are not suited to detect.

This is the reason why non-HA dogs, dogs that would let a complete stranger walk up to them on the chain, beat them, and the dog will continue licking them, will react this way when its "pack" is threatened.

I must say though, im as confused as can be on a few things. Firstly, I thought Squirt was dead? Were you not the person that bought a pup from the flea market and it died right afterwords? If im confusing you with someone else, my appologies.

Secondly, dont take this the wrong way, but I do not think that dog in your sig line is a purebred APBT. My gut feeling based on looking at the pic alone (which isnt worth much!) is it looks much more like a mastiff puppy, probably APBT/Mastiff mix, then a pure APBT.

If this is the case, it would certainly explain a little better why the pup exhibits strong territorial protection tendencies, that APBT's GENERALLY dont carry in large percentages. If you werent in the room, I'd say the dog was protecting territory first and foremost. I'm not at all saying APBT's dont show territorial protection traits, just simply many other breeds (namely mastiff-type dogs) show it in much higher percentages than APBT's.

I'm speaking from experience, owning both APBT's and mastiffs. I raised an APBT and a English Mastiff in the home, of the exact same age, until where they are at now. My APBT is much more inclined to bark and alert me to a problem, and will only deter of a threat if it becomes a blatant threat to a human life, not property. The mastiff on the other hand, has no qualms about taking a chunk out of someone trespassing on "her" and her "packs" property. She will not bark and bring the attention to herself, she handles the situation by herself, with at the most of a warning, a low growl that you can't hear unless you are in the immediate area.

Mastiff=good gaurd dog, for both human life, and property.

APBT= not worth a shit in the guard dog context, unless there is a very real threat on its owners safety. I can't tell you how many destroying box dogs I could walk up to, beat, steal their food, water, neglect them....and still let them off the chain to have them hop in the passenger seat and take off with me with a smile and a tail wag, liking me the whole way home.

In fact, nearly anyone I know with dogs has at some point or another brought in a non-APBT to roam the yard to protect against property theft.

this, for me, is a shakey road. yes, the dog protected you...but she did still go after a human. good on her....that's great that she was able to make that judgement call....but consider her inability to judge correctly when your kids are playing hide and go seek. just something to think about.

This is the way it is. No quarms about it. Any dog will protect it's domain if need be even the Pit Bull. Because a idiot tried to break in and got bit doesn't mean HA at all. He wouldn't have that leg here. If my Shar Pei's didn't tear him a new ass Count, Gretchen, Nightshade or Sunshine would have. I am not too sure my coon hound woudn't nail the bastard either. She has some grit. Bottom line he is lucky It wasn't my house or I was not crashed out on the couch there because the dog would have been his least of problems waking me up. I am one of the folks 14Rock speak of that uses another type of dog for guard work. That and a big gun. Bue Bue my female shar pei will bark and bite. But Pudgy will bark and tear a new ass hole for some intruder. He has a calm way about him if I invite some one but if they walk in before I say enter or come around while I am out it is bad news for the dummy. lol
