Ok... I'm beginning to wonder if Joy maybe pregnant, but when I took her to the vet about 3 weeks ago, and they did a exam on her, they never mentioned that she could be... Pregnant dogs are WAY out of my league, as I've never dealt with one... Yet... What are signs that she could be? My reasons that she may be pregnant are 1) her nipples have dropped even more and are starting to sag a bit more, 2) she's eating almost as much as Isabella who is twice her size, 3) she humps, alot. ( Normally, I would say it is a dominance deal, BUT it does not appear to be a dominance issue and I've also know that females will hump each other to bring themselves into heat, but she's been here almost 4 weeks, wouldn't she have come into heat already if that was the case???) Is it possible that being pregnant is causing her to get horny, which is why she's humping excessively? I was planning on getting her spayed soon,(been doing things in increments so as not to stress her out) but if she's pregnant, what would I do??? Have the pups or get her a abortion and spay at the same time??? Are any of the above mentions mean she could possibly be pregnant-- if not what are the signs? Worried... Anyone???

Wow!! I did not know that humping would bring my female into heat! That's amazing. Maybe you should check her by getting a cott and seeing if it would insert easily to the second knuckle. If so, that may be a sign that she is getting horny. So you had better keep her away from the other females as you do not want to pass on the recessive gene of gayness. Besides that would double up on the femal chomosomes and leave the males off!! Good luck!

It is proven that there are only two creatures that have sex for pleasure dogs not being one of them. Therefore they do not have the mentality to have "horny" feelings of desire for sex. However they are driven by hormones, fermones, domination and the pur nature of the beast. Her humping would if pregnant would be not much different than not. Dominance or coming into a flux of hormones it likey your issue. However pregnancy and humping are not related typically. Not to say it would be impossible, just not very likely. The only sure fire what to find out she is pregnant is to have her tested for such. There is a condition known as a false pregnancy so it is your only sure thing. Dogs don't make them selves come into heat. Heat cycles are not a concious effort no more than you control your periods or firtile times. How ever it would be interesting if it could be that way.

I missed where you got Joy. Is she a rescue? Did you just get her recently?

If you aren't ready to deal with puppies, I would do a spay-abort. Its harsh, I know, but it also means you wont have to place her pups when there are so few good homes around anyway. As far as stress, you have to weigh which would be worse. The stress of a day in the vet's office and then back at home, or the stress of carrying/whelping/raising a litter and dealing with whatever complications may come along with that.

JMO. Good luck whatever you choose.

Joy is a stray that found us when I was walking my dogs one night, she is officially now a foster because I'm trying to find her home. It's not that I'm not ready to deal with the puppies, I just feel that they will be hard to place, if in fact, she turns out to be pregnant.
I can't believe I listed to that idiot who told me that females hump to bring themselves into heat, I thought it weird when my vet told me they come into heat about every 6 months... :( I ain't got no problem admitting, this stuff ( pregnant dogs) is way off base for me, so please be patient if my questions sounds like they are coming from a idiot... Well, this topic makes me a idiot... *shrug*
Here's a picture of her, with me, Baxter and Isabella.

An idiot doesn't learn from error. The wise learn every day. I have to admit that reading that I did think my Lord what has she learned and who told her this. You should tell them that it worked and they locked up and you have three pregnant bitches thanks to him and his crazy education. That will perpetuate the story now he will be preaching that dogs not only can come into heat by will and humping that they can also self inpregnate with out a male to inseminate her. The evil thoughts that crossed my mind were unreal. you should slap that dude. Hard.

Just wanted to say, Joy looks like a honey. Good luck placing her. With any luck, she's not preggers and you don't have to deal with that. But if she is, well, sucky decision I know.

three happy very beautiful dogs. I was never good for rescue unless you call keeping a stray for life a rescue. I get attached and about get soft when a pup goes to another kennel. And I know I will see the dog many times through out its life. I get attached to dogs like some people do eachother. Some one would rather have a fist fight with a brick semi going 90mph than to mess with one of my dogs that is for sure.
