It's about to become more expensive to own a pit bull in Salina, and some people are trying to find a way to get around the new law.
The ordinance will require pit bull owners to carry a certain amount of insurance and keep the dogs fenced up.
A veterinarian says about 20 people so far have asked him to change their dogs' identity. Doctor David Atherton says owners of mixed-breed pit bulls want their dogs listed instead as mixed-breed terriers or some other cross.
Atherton says he won't do it. If he knows it's a pit-bull cross, Atherton says, he declines to write something else on a dog's rabies vaccination form.
