Animal Shelters Cope With Pit Bull Dumping

LEXINGTON, Mo. -- The problem of how to handle pit bulls is spreading out from the metro area.

As more cities ban the breed, it's having a ripple effect that's reaching rural communities, KMBC's Maria Antonia reported Tuesday.

In Lexington, Friends of the Friendless Animal Shelter has rescued 20 pit bulls this month. Workers said the dogs were dumped on dusty roads in Lafayette and Ray counties.

"I think people are panicking and dumping their dogs on country roads. It can starve to death, it can get injured and lay and suffer," said Gina Duggan with Friends of the Friendless.

Due to all the dog dumping, the Lexington animal shelter is full. Workers are looking for families out of state to adopt the pit bulls.

"We're not going to kill the animals, but we've gone out of state to adopt them," Duggan said.

She is asking dog owners not to dump the animals.

"I envision it getting worse. I think this is just the start of it," Duggan said.

Nolefan. That is so true. I am begining that there are more cur people than any other living mamal or animal. The dumping of dogs out here in the country cost me some serious money. Last years totals for livestock, poultry, fence damage and damage to the barrier of my bird houses came up to $ 16,575 and that was a light year compaired to some. My buddy who own's the cattle ranch next to me losses were over $120,000. He raises registered beefmaster cattle. One bull alone can carry a $35,000 price tag. It adds up fast. He started paying me this year to rid of his wild and dumped dog and coyote proble. Se the stray dogs get mated into the coyote packs then you have a coyote that doesn't fear humans and you have increased coyote attacks to lived stock and people. My dogs know very well how to hunt them. and I dispatch them. At first he was scared to let me use my dogs. But I took him out 5 days strait and now not only does he let me hunt them and pays me but he bought a litter from one of my kennels. and they have just started tagging along with me. Soon he wont need me. I will still go with him though. I don't care about the money but he wouldn't take no. So he started slipping it in my truck in the ashtray. I don't smoke but I was looking for change one day. I need to clean that thing more often. lol So I bought him a 22 250 for Christmas. Ha can't pull one me.

People do not realize the damage that packs of feral dogs can do to livestock. Nor do they realize that their sweet pookie dog can slip out of the yard at night and kill neighbor's livestock. And it is pretty gruesome what one dog or a pack(of pet dogs) can do to sheep, chickens, calves or the like...
It's a big problem in California as the suburbs encroach onto agricultural land...
People just don't realize that their dogs can roam for miles causing problems to livestock.
Another thing I learned the hard way. Fortunately a park ranger chewed me a new one and taught me some responsibility. I have changed a lot in my pet ownership over the years...reality finally seeped into my thick head...so there is hope for change and learning you folks. I used to be the believer of many of the myths about dogs, but some sense got in somehow and I flatter myself to think that I am much more responsible now than I used to be. I definitely have a more open mind and am more amenable to learning. I am certainly a LOT more responsible than I used to be.
I never let my dog (or dogs) offleash now. I confess that I did in the past. With predictable bad results..no person ever got bit by one of my dogs but one of my dogs(not a pit) came close to biting a person. I did have dogs that attacked someone's pet dog at one time. Fortunately the attacked dog survived, it was a gory lesson in my irresponsibility....I feel bad about that to this day..how could I have been so stupid?
I certainly learned better but at someone's pet's expense. I got off lightly...I only confess these things so that inexperienced owners on these forums will consider listening to some of the experts on these forums...
It's been a long hard road for me to open up my mind about dog ownership and dog training. A long hard road for some other people's dogs...I was very, very lucky when I was irresponsible...So were my dogs as none of them got hurt...

That's sad to read. Don't get them if you don't want them. That's like dumping off a child to me.

i personally would move out of state or to an area where they are accepted before dumping my bud.

Yeah, I personallyNEVER dumped a dog, did a lot of other dumb stuff. But I used to live in the country and plenty of people did dump their pets. I can't understand it either. It's kinder to take them to the shelter, shoot them or have them euthanizedat the vets, than to leave them alone out in the country...
