)Dogs Suffer From Mistaken Pit Bull IdentityKANSAS CITY, KAN. - One Kansas City, Kan. woman is upset after animal control picked up her dog, even though it doesn't have a drop of pit bull blood in its body.
Sadie has been a family pet for eight months - that's why Jessica Burgess was more than a little concerned when animal control took Sadie away.
"I thought they was going to put my dog down," Burgess said. "They said they had a report we had a pit bull."
Kansas City, Kan. has had a pit bull ban since 1990, but Sadie isn't a pit bull. She's a sharpei-boxer mix. It took the opinion of three veterinarians to convince animal control to let Sadie go.
"Our dog is not a pit," Burgess said.
This isn't the first case of mistaken dog identity that animal control has encountered. It seems a lot of people aren't exactly sure what pit bulls look like, so FOX 4 put the public to the test.
FOX 4 showed people photos of five breeds, only one of which is a pit bull.
Some people were dog experts, and named each breed correctly. Others probably wouldn't know a pit bull if it were sitting in their lap.
Kelly Lightfoot, veterinarian, said a lot of people don't know their pit bulls.
"Pit bulls can be mistaken for American bull dogs, or bull dogs or boxers," Lightfoot said.
Lightfoot said it even gets trickier when dogs are mixed breeds like Sadie - they almost need a name tag reading "I'm not a pit bull."
A few identifying characteristics to keep in mind are that pit bulls have short, shiny coats that show off their muscular bodies. Pit bulls have ears that are high-set and generally don't weigh more than 80 lb.
and who says B.S.L. isn't working??????
