I'm using a axle/O-ring set up for the first time. I have always used a heavy duty swivel set up.
The dog wraps the chain around the axle and ends up shortening his chain up.
I find dead grass and some debris(little rocks and sticks) tangled on the axle with the chain.
What am I doing wrong?? Axle and a O ring, quick link to chain, swivel on his bullsnap. Should I attach a swivel to the O-ring on the axle? That is the only solution I can come up with and I still dont think that will work. I have been raking the debris out of his chain space to eliminate that possibility. The jerk just digs rocks back up anyway.LOL
I started with the axle very close to the ground and that still happened, then I raised the axle up about 8 in from the ground....still happening. My next solution is to knock the axle damn near all the way in the dirt, but then the chain wont move freely 360 degrees.
Any suggestions would be great.

Lose the O ring.Rap the chain around the axle and quicklink it.Quicklink to swivel to collar. leave axle up about 6 inches so chains moves 360 degrees.this is what i do.hope it helps

Thank you!! Ill give that a shot tomorrow.
Dig a hole and bury the axle. Make sure you have a good swivel on the collar and your worries will be over. Nothing for the chain to wrap itself around. Used this setup for years and never had a problem. Branches, grass, rocks, can't get tangled up and wrapped around the axle if it below the surface. Learned it from the Mountain Man.

I weld the chain to a long sturdy peice of rebar and sledg hammer it into the ground. I weld it about 5 inchis down fromt the top and pant the last 3 feet. Then drive that sucker home. I have gotten too close to one that didn't have a dog on it at the time and it broke the pto shaft from the tractor and the brush hog. They ain't comming up. Get the schedule rebar about two man thumbs wide. cut the bottom end at a 45 so it will penitrate a root if it has too. and spit a rock too. If your in bedrock Your screwed but you can rent a hammer drill and do it. Yah I have had to do that and epoxy in a rod. Pain in the rear.
Oh and I like to weld about 2 foot of heavy chain onto the rebar that way it will wear allot longer and you can just use a link to attach it to the dogs chain.
Really after a while you won't have grass there anyway., Unless you don't have a dog on it for a while.

YOUR O-RING IS TOO SMALL GET A BIGGER O-RING....HIT UP STILLWATER HE HAS GOOD ONES. Put the swivel up near your dog not near the axle.

We too have done this one...it works rather well, they never get tangled...there is nothing for the chain to wrap itself.....We have 2 dogs on set-ups like this, the rest are with O-ring/bullsnaps...we have have to rake their area often, I like the ones that have them in the ground...no raking/tangling required! To each his own!

Just a little F.Y.I.......I ditched the axle set up and went back to my trusty swivel. I tried most all suggestions and still had problems. The chain is about 17 ft and there are some little crap tree stumps ive been pulling as I find them. Maybe the chain was getting caught on the stumps?? Maybe Im an idiot? or maybe the dog is just a glutton for punishment. He must not like eating, drinking and sleeping in his house LOL.
Anyway, problem solved with a swivel instead of an axle. When or if my dogs ever break a swivel I will explore the axle again. For now its not worth the headache of worrying is he tangled up every few hours.
Thxs for help anyway to all who tried.

Well, guess I am late, but anyway,
I have some on the axles, and the rings are too small, went to Eppenette kennels and got the big ones, tremendous difference. Also, I lap link a swivel to the ring, and then again to the chain. Have some with the axle buried and a piece of chain, bout a foot, comin out the ground, then swiveled to the chain on the dog. Then I got some on a homemade tieout that is working great!! Here's a pic of it.

I take a 8-10 ft piece of re-bar bend it into a U shape. I use a 1/4 in stainless steel swivel and loop the rebar thru it. I then pound the rebar into the ground all the way with the top of the swivel sticking up, attach a quick link (bad luck with hammer downs) to the chain, a quick link to a smaller swivel, attached to a bullsnap attached to a O-ring on the collar.

How often are you replacing chains motts? I would never wrap the chain directly around the axle, when the links rub they weaken and will eventually snap. Possibly while showing little external wear, but the integrity of the metal is gone.
There have been some good suggestions, many of them will work. My advice was bury the damn axle and chain, or attach a swivel at the axle end of the chain also. This is what I use, and have had no problems.
