I'll admit that in addition to bulldogs, I'm a huge horse junkie. I especially am a huge fan of horse racing & have read up, studied, & collected just about every piece of literature & memorabilia of the past & present greats. IMO, the racing Thoroughbred is very much similar to the working APBT. Well, I just bought a new book on Funny Cide. Although I'm not very far into it, it only took until page 5 before I found a wonderful quote:
"If money and pedigree were such sure things, how come they so often failed? If the game was purely about bloodlines and money, the richest owner and most expensive horse would win every time. But you see, they didn't. You always get the odd stranger." --Tom Everard

I too have an intrest in racehorses. I've never seen them do their thing, but I can admire it. After seeing some pics of horses ready for the show, I cant help but notice a striking similarity.

LOL Fiddy. I've ridden in shorts but flannel is typically a no-no. I haven't worn a flannel shirt since I was 14....back when it was cool to wear them with some tight jeans & those lumbarjack looking boots.:D

I've always loved thoroughbreds, probably because they are so misunderstood. When we first rescued Sporty, some of the people at the barn we kept him at would make rude comments like "Oh, why would you want a TB? They are so crazy and stupid and impossible to train!"
Here's my Thoroughbred, he never won a single race in his life! :p

Thoroughbreds are not the only horses to race.. Quarter horses, Paints, Appaloosas, Arabians and yes, they even hold mule races .... some countries have anglo arab racing (TB x Arab) and a few other breeds .. And with the stock breeds (qH, Paint, Appy) they are allowed a precentage of Thoroughbred in them (which is prefered for the racing lines.. ) Funny how all the breeds i mentioned all vary in looks depending on what they were bred for ..
there's a very good article I read once in a bulldog magazine that was put out on Three Bars ( if you are into racing, you will know who Three Bars (tb) is ) and the reasoning behind alot of breedings associtated with him and how it applies to bulldogs

So true. I myself own Arabians & love them as to me they are the "do it all" horse....the equivalent of the APBT in the horse world.
Also, it's very interesting to look at the difference b/n the true racing Quarterhorse (that's what they were originally bred for for those who didn't know....the kings of the quarter mile) & the short, stock, overdone Quarterhorse more popular today thanks to breeding for looks over historical function.

well yes and no .. all the "types" have evolved in the QH to some degree as the AQHA is always changing or adding new rules. The true QH i would say doesnt resemble the modern racing qH but more the working stock QH .. big butts lol.. the halter show horses look more like a body builder lol
Thoroughbreds have always been said to have delicate ankles and todays racers seem to be proving this more and more .. If I had to have a tb i would take a hunter type though.
TB's are excellent for crossing into other breeds to produce better event horses and improve breeds .. as is arabians..
Personally I love the Gypsy Vanners .. old breed but only been imported to the us since 1995 or so

Horses are incredible! The qualities I admire in APBT's can be found in a good horse. They are incredible athletes, they define, speed, stamina and muscle. The are game, they go and go until they break their bones, amazing animals. They are full of fire, heart and natural drive.
Mia - who is your favorite great one?

There is such a link between horses and APBT's- largely with training and sheer heart from the animal.
I train saddlebreds, thoroughbreds and quarter horses- and I also help people with their horses of many other breeds. Some horse breeds are more finicky and less APBT type than others, but if a horse loves what he's doing, the heart is all the same.
I personally think cutting and reining cow horses are most similar to APBT's. Muscles and lean, but built like a freight train and ready to GO! They size up everything before they attempt to turn it back, and a true blue cowhorse will look at a Brahma Cow or a Longhorn and never falter. Never skittish or aggressive, just mind control with the moves to back it up.
Gorgeous foal by the way!!! I've seen so many beauties this year. Here is a billy badass cutting horse I've been working with.

Hey I love the horse discussion! I grew up riding horseback before I could walk! My Mom carried me with her on the front of the saddle. We had Quarter Horses I love a good cutting Quarter Horse. They lay their ears back and eyeball those steers like they love what they are doing. The rider is just along for the ride. Or the cues are so subtle only the hrose knows them. It is a pleasure to watch a good Quarter horse doing a good job!
You know all thorougbreds were descended from Arabians...three famous Arabians imported into England in the, umm, 1700's I think... Arabians are an ancient and beautiful breed...the original "do-it-all" horse...
Beautiful foal, I love the white comma on its face! Thanks for posting that!
I very much agree with your comparison. Horses and pits are by far my two most favorite animals, (in fact, this room where the comp is in, is covered in horses pics, and pitbull "things".) It's, imo, their drive. You can see it in their eyes... they hear and see what's going on around them, but it's almost as if their minds are solely on the jobs they've yet to do.
Both are just magnificent animals.
...nice post...

Mia - who is your favorite great one?Toss up between Man O' War & Secretariat for the true greats. Their are several others that I love b/c they might not have had the build or the speed, but their hearts kept them in the race. I also loved Ruffian.

I have to add Ruffian to that list. That little filly had more heart than any horse i can think of. Her leg was shatter'd and she was still trying to run and win, it took everything that jockey had to stop her.
Its a damn shame that there wasnt better medical devices then (waking the horse up in a pool instead of in a padded room).. otherwise she would have most likely lived. (She woke up from surgery and starting trying to "run" while on her side, thrashed about and broke the cast and injured her leg again, so they euthanized her).:(
MIA- have any Arab favs??
