A flirtpole can be as simple as a rope tied to a fishing pole. Its just a lure on a long pole you maneuver just in front of the dogs nose, but out of reach, to give them a good work out chasing it. Normally, you dont want the dogs to catch the flirtpole, unless you built it strong for this purpose. A flirtpole is not the same as a springpole, in which the dog simply plays tug-of-war with a spring tied to an innanimate object. A break stick is a tool of the breed, which looks sort of like a wooden or poly knife. Its not sharp, just a wedge which is put in the back of a bulldogs teeth, all the way through the mouth, then turned to safely get your animal off its hold. Without a break stick, many people try to stop fights by just yanking two dogs apart (which causes that whole area in a hold to just be torn out, causing much more damage in the process), or they choke the dog, beat the dog, pick up the backlegs and turn on some Barry White, whatever... The bottom line is if you own a bulldog, you need a break stick. Its simply a safety concern in case of an accidental fight say between your dog and a wandering stray that comes in the yard, or if you have other animals. Aside from most of the techniques listed above to break up fights between non-bulldog breeds not working, they are extremely dangerous to the dogs, and you'd be better off letting them go at it until one takes a breath and you can quickly seperate them. A word of caution though, once you step up and become a responsible owner with a break stick, and proper excersise equipment for your dog, you may find the need to explain yourself over and over to people who just dont understand the breed.

Using a break stick incorrectly may result in chipped or broken teeth, which is still a hell of alot better than damaged windpipes, cracked skulls, broken ribs, and even bullet holes many idiots will use to break up a fight! The most important thing is stay calm, and dont do anything counter-productive.
