A dog's bone structure is not completely developed until 12-18 months. I've never done springpole, but I'm assuming you're supposed to wait until the bones and joints are mature. I don't see any reason to start them earlier. It's just dangerous.

If you have it set up so the pups can play and tug, but their feet stay on the ground just like you were playing regular tug with them that is fine IMO. Just playing regular tug games with them is also fun and safe. You can teach them how to out as well at that age. Playing tug accomplishes two things the exercise and teqachinh obedience with a distraction.
IMO there is no reason to stress their growing joints.

you can play tug with your pup right now just as long as you dont shake the hell out of the puppy. check the gums on your pup if they bleed your being too rough i wouldn't pick them up off the ground too much like that. and it's better excercise when all fours or hind legs are on the ground.

Tug of war is fine, a springpole as you posted is not. I suggest waiting until the joints are set a bit more before letting the dog get too crazy on it, around 12 months is a good starting point. I like that you have the springpole low enough for the dog to be on 4 back legs, which is much better than most who let their dogs needlessly endanger themselves by hanging in the hair (doing so doesnt give the dog any real excersise-its for looks only). You'll find its a better work-out with all 4 legs on the ground. Of course, sometimes that not feasible as they just jump and bite up higher, if need be, break them off and set them down lower. And no, I would never do that (as D.J. is doing) to a puppy, thats just asking for trouble be it in the form of a broken/dislocated jaw, or a broken back when the pup falls wrong and gets paralyzed (and yes, this does happen quite often).

But if you're thinking about showing your dog, that kind of stress can throw their bite off. (Not in every dog, but it has been known to happen.) Just throwing that out there as a possibility.

Just play tug-of-war from a young age, bulldogs pick up on these things naturally ;)
At 12 months, he should transition from the tug toy to the sprinpole as soon as you show it to em.

thx guys,
but the q? is how can i teach my dog's to do this thing's? Pretty much it comes down to if a dog has the drive, then he will do it naturally when you play with him. Now if the pup has no drive you can still work with that by building the drive, but it's just not the same IMO.
Is your pup interested in chasing balls and tugging at all?

my pup is 4 months old and he really likes playing with the flirt pole and tugging with me. but he's not really to interested in chasing balls, he likes to chew on them and play with them with his paws but he's not really interested in fetching.
so my question is....what are some things that i can start doing with him to help get his drive up?

U aren't too late i didn't start my dog on a springpole until he was around a year old. It should come natural to the dogs, just give it some time

Is your dog interested in cats or rats? ya'll got them kangaroo rats over there in your land let them bust up some of those things they will get more driven then. Just keep them off the camel spiders and scorpions. I used to practic throughing knives at those things though. Got pretty good at killing them damn things. Snakes too. Out side of combat it was boring as hell there.

Wait awhile, you may have dogs with no drives to work, but you will not really know for sure until the dog is mentally mature. Just keep trying to play tug of war, when they are doing that, hold your end vertical like a springpole will be, eventually, tie it to a rope with alot of slack, let the pup play with you and slowly give him some more rope until he has reached the end and is still playing with "you". Keep your hand on the rope but dont actually do anything, just tease the dog into thinking its still playing with you, once it realizes what a fun challenge it is to play with the spring, they wont give a rats ass if you have the rope or not.

I hear that A.M. If I didnt put it out of reach, Odin would work it all day too...except he's not smart enough to stop for feed and water! Normally he's pretty lax on his chainspace, and isnt too active so I never really worried about him jumping about 7' with a 5/16ths chain on to grab the springpole that I toss over a shed rafter so its not hanging down to where he can play while I'm not supervising, until one day I came home about 30 mins after I left, and sure enough he's working it like theres no tomarrow. Had to find a new place to stash it, cant risk an injury by letting them work while you're gone.
