Where i live (Pennsylvania) there aren't any wild boars to hunt, but there are some wild sheep and goats that run around. Apparently a farmer years back just gave up on farming and let the sheep go so now they run all throughout the woods near my house. Because they aren't native to PA you can hunt them whenever you want without a license so i have hunted them before. Im wondering if anyone has ever used APBT's or any other catchdogs to hunt sheep or goats?

i never hunted with dogs. i would think a dog that could hunt hogs, could hunt sheep also.

mine "hunt" our goats, but only to lick and mother them. mine are goat freaks, they love to lick the goats, my bambam snuggles and naps with my boys when i let him in there while i milk.
now turtles better watch out, they can find a turtle in the fields in a new york minute.

I think your probably right, i think im going to give it a try. I don't think my dog would have any trouble with them because he's around 70lbs and the sheep weigh maybe 100lbs at the most. I think it would be awesome to be able to catch them alive so i can start my own little herd to raise.

yea i've heard of people using hounds for hunting coyote's, but i haven't heard of anyone using dogs to hunt sheep. Anyway I'm wondering if my dogs natural instincts will come to play if he sees a herd of sheep running. He's very prey driven and enjoys catching anything that comes in the yard including rabbits, birds and foxes so im guessing he'll get a kick out of hunting something larger.

I'm also wondering if hunting and catching large prey was another way of testing your dog's gameness. I would think it would be a pretty good way to test the dog because he is forced to make the decision of quiting or hold on, what do u guys think?

There is only one way to test gameness, and its not catching wild prey. I suppose a dog could catch a sheep, but really, why dont you just catch them yourself? LOL Boars, coyotes, fox, badgers, etc all can fight back, I really dont know how fair it is to let your dog catch a defense-less sheep. If you want them to raise your own herd, you dont really want your dog catching them, as your going to them have a dog that will "catch" the sheep in the pen anytime you allow him too. A sheep gets out wanders into his chain spot, that sheep is "caught" also. I do think it would be fun to hunt sheep by yourself, no gun, no knife, just your hands, feet, and a rope. Sneak up on a pack, chase it down, tackle and hog-tie that mother'. LMAO

U obviously have never been around wild sheep before. First of all sheep are always in a herd which means more eyes and noses to detect u. I've shot a few with my bow but thats different because u wait for them to come to u. Second those little Fu**ers are faster than u would think. I tried catching one that was hit by a car and was limping severly and damnit that thing made me look like a damn fool cause it bolted. Third there are a few large rams in the bunch and let me tell u their horns look like they could do some nice damage especially because they curl like crazy with very sharp tips. I would think a dog could get gutted if it wasn't careful. Now the gameness part, i've heard some boar hunters talk about it before and they agreed that against a mean @$$ boar an apbt could definately be tested very well. I guess against a sheep it would only show your dogs prey drive or tenacity if the sheep didn't fight back, But what if it did fight back?

A rank boar will not test gameness...it will however test heart. A catchdog without heart is not a catchdog at all!

Ya I raise Barbados sheep and they are wild. Really aggressive. The ram can kill you very easily. But they really taste good. They friggin bite....and they don't let go...the wild sheep are evil, evil, evil.
And, the people I know who use dogs for coyote hunting do not allow their dogs any contact with the coyote. The dog is used to lure the coyote into the open to shoot it. A single coyote will lure a dog back to the pack. A trained coyote hunting dog must have an excellent recall, a flawless recall.
