View Full Version : Dog Refusing To Walk?

Sometimes when walking her on the leash she will fight me. She'll refuse to go forward even though we're not heading anywhere she doesn't like. Meaning, been there before w/ no problems. It's starting to piss me off to the point where I want to yank her thru the air ( no lectures please cuz I wont do that ). Any suggestions will be appreciated.

how 'bout carrying some "treats" in your pocket, and for steps taken, give them as a reward. Entice her, so to speak, to walk. Let her associate walking with something good.
Just an idea...

The treat thing works...also, try ignoring her...just stop and look away...when you walk, dont look at her...tell her good girl, but don't pay attention to her until she's done well for a while. usually, you ignoring them, will entice them to follow

That's a good idea, it works really well when teaching them to heel.
I agree with treating while she walks. Try keeping her focussed on you. For the first little bit, try doing this while walking around somewhere familiar, with as little distraction as possible. As far as "yanking her through the air" I know you said you wouldn't do that, and I'm glad. Doing that will make her not want to walk at all. She'll be afraid.
Sometimes on the walk back from the park, Boss tries to walk like a full leash length behind me. So, I'll get him to heel and reward him with tasty treats every ten steps or so. You might have to treat more often when you first start to do this.
Good luck, let us know how it goes :)

Pudgy does that to me some times I have places around the farm that I can hook his leash when he is fighting me and I will walk away and leave him there for a while and go play with another dog. He then gets jelious and knocks it off. Some times I just keep walking he will come or fight it. but I am 230 pounds I can out pull him. The only dog that does this to me ever. Oh they did first couple of times on the leash but after that it was cake walk. Reward for good and give no reinforcement for bad behaviour. Not even looking at them. Ignore them.

Good advice is already posted... also try changing direction and then going back the way you were headed. Sometimes the simple distraction gets the dog back on track

Hey, just keep walking, even if their little butt is bouncing off the ground in protest. Keep walking, even if they hollar. You are the Alpha, they have to do what you want them to do, without fail, everytime. Don't beg them or talk nice to them...in a firm voice before you start walking call their name and tell them to heel/let's go (whatever your action word is) and take off.

My friend's dog did not like to walk on a leash so he attached a short leash to the dog and let the dog drag it around everywhere...after a day or two he just picked up the leash when the dog was outside and the dog followed.

If the dog has never been on a chain set up, now would be a good time to start. A dog that has been on a chain takes to walking on a leash with ease. A retractable leash will work wonders as well. Get out in the open and let your dog do the walking at first, you don't have to start out in front. A retractable leash is a good way to teach your dog to come as well. Some things takes time, so don't be in too big a hurry.

I wouldn't do a retractable..if you want something long...use a lunge line for a horse...retractables are not reliable and tend to break under pressure, even if they say they are for a 100 pound dog...

Try to make it fun for her, give her loads of attention and love.
Keep calling her name, lil clicks and whistles, speeding up,slowing down
jogging short distances, change directions.just play up to her,let her
see just how much fun this walking can be.
Good luck!

Retractble leads are a big pet peeve of mine as most can not control their dogs on it. They are very dangerous and snap easily IMO. When Patcheeno was only 6 months and before I knew better I had one. He snapped the heavy duty one like it was nothing when he pulled. If you chose it as a training tool I wouldn't use it with a strong puller or unless you are in an enclosed area
You can also try using a regular long line
How is your dog making out with the training. Have you done anything that was advised here that worked well for you???
