Springfield,MO -- Most Springfield pit bull owners are apparently in no rush to register their animals before an Oct. 16 deadline.
The Springfield-Greene County Health Department reported only two owners filed paperwork today, the first day to register pit bulls. At least two have appointments tomorrow.
Ron Boyer, assistant health director with the department, estimated there are 500 pit bulls requiring registration in Springfield.
A Springfield City Council majority approved an ordinance in April requiring all pit bull owners to register their dogs with the city for a $50 annual fee.
Before they can be registered, the dogs must be spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies and microchipped. Pit bulls must be leashed and muzzled when in public.
Pit bull owners may make appointments by contacting the health department at 864-1658.
