Pit Bull Taken from Dickson Shelter in Break-in

Has anyone seen Spike? It appears that he's been kidnapped from the Humane Society of Dickson County.

Josi Morgan, Humane Society director, said someone broke into the shelter on Eno Road after office hours Wednesday night and took the 3-year-old, 80-pound red pit bull.

She said the chain-link fence at the shelter had been cut and the office door had been kicked open. She said that despite the presence of money and narcotics for euthanasia purposes, the only thing taken was the dog.

Morgan said she's afraid that whoever took the dog will use him as a fighting dog and that pit bull fights are gaining prominence in Dickson and surrounding counties.

''It just bothers me so much because I know what they're going to do with that dog,'' she said. ''He is so loving and kind. They're going to have to be very violent to him to train him to be mean, or he'll be killed because he'll refuse to fight.''

Morgan said a man, who appeared to be in his mid-20s, came into the shelter with his wife and family Wednesday afternoon and wanted to adopt Spike. Morgan said that when she told the man that Spike was not up for adoption, he argued with her and spoke with other workers at the shelter, all of whom told him that the dog was not for adoption.

The man left in a huff, she said.

''This dog has been getting a lot of attention because he's really super muscular and athletic,'' Morgan said. ''He looks like a powerhouse, a big head, no scars on him. He came from a family that was moving and had to give him up. He was a family pet, not a fighting dog.''
