The Middlesboro City Council is backing off on a proposed ban on Pit Bulls.

The city is now working with Bell County officials to come up with a plan to address safety concerns.

On Friday night, Middlesboro police were trying to help Shantwan Wilson get his Pit Bull back on his property.

"It lunged at one of the officers. He fought it back, but the third time he felt threatened enough to fire one shot," Chief Jeff Sharpe said.

"That's the first time one of my dogs got loose in six years and by the grace of God he didn't die," Shantwan Wilson said.

Despite the incident the city of Middlesboro has decided is is not going to go forward with a Pit Bull ban, but is talking over other solutions with the county.

One of the ideas the city and county are looking at would require the owners of large dogs to keep them fenced in at all times.

Shantwan Wilson believes it wasn't necessary for police to shoot his dog, but he does admit there's a problem.

"I do agree to a certain extent! There shouldn't be dogs in the parks and there shouldn't be dogs at ballgames," Wilson said.

Wilson is just happy his dog Bane is alive and that he won't have to give it up for a Pit Bull ban.

The mayor of Middlesboro says the issue is not on the agenda for their city council meeting, but they will announce their decision to work with the county for a solution.
