I hope Im posting this in the right place. I was wondering if the APBT is a recognized breed? I keep finding conflicting answers to this question. Some say no, that "Pit Bull" is a term to discribe many "bully breed" dogs. Other sources say they are their own breed. Just curious. I know in the past they were not a recognized breed(by different registry standards).

"American Pitbull Terrier" is a recognized breed. "Pitbull" is not. Pitbull is a generic term to describe several recognized breeds, and if we listen to the media...any mixed breed mut that has a large head, muscular body, and short hair.
"Pitbull" generally describes the APBT, AST, and the SBT type dogs.

There is no breed recongnized simply as "pit bull" that is a term usually used to describe a dog of certain traits or to describe the staff, staffy bull and apbt. The apbt is recognized breed yes. Only the AKC does not recognize the APBT they recognize the Amstaff but the akc are morons because the APBT was what created the amstaff. SO yes the APBT is recognized by the UKC and ADBA.

Thanks 14rock.That's what I thought, but was not sure. I've heard so many conflicting answers. I've had some discussions about this with some co workers, needed to get my facts together, I hate to be wrong..lol

They do it with several other breeds also.

They do it with several other breeds also. People that dont know better refer to any dog with "pit bull traits" as a pit bull (ex media and public) and with us that know the breed we refer to the APBT as a pit bull and/or all of these the APBT,Staffy bull & amstaff. So yea any other breed that looks like a pit bull is a pit bull to the public. Most people have little to no idea of what a pit bull looks like. They think any dog is one when they are big aggresive dogs, probaly brindle and with croped ears.
ask your friends to find the "pit bull".
It's easy to see why many confuse the "term" pit bull, as being a "breed".
