Montgomery schoolchildren found a dead pit bull hanging from a chain on a playground swing set, authorities said Thursday.
Students at Martin Luther King Elementary School, 4655 Gateway Drive, made the discovery Wednesday morning when they arrived for classes. Police estimate the dog was left at the school between 4 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The pit bull, shot once and strung up by its neck, was a brown male and no more than a year old, said Ron Van Herwyn with the Montgomery County Humane Society.
No one has come forward to claim the dog's body, but Van Herwyn would like to talk to the owner.
"This incident was brutal," Van Herwyn said. "Anyone who would do something like this and leave it for kids to see is really bad."
Authorities have no suspects. The perpetrator would face charges of felony cruelty to animals.
Martin Luther King officials do not think the dog's death was related to anyone at the school, said Tom Salter, spokesman for Montgomery Public Schools.
"One of the staff members had seen the dog before, walking on a leash with its owners," Salter said. "So apparently the dog was from the neighborhood."
Anyone with information about this case should contact Van Herwyn at (334) 409-0622, extension 208, or send an e-mail to officer@montgomeryhumane.com (officer@montgomeryhumane.com). The telephone numbers for police are (334) 241-2651 or (334) 262-4000, the Secret Witness line.
