SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Owning pets could become a thing of the past in Silicon Valley.

No, cats and dogs aren't being banished from the California high-tech haven. But Santa Clara County, Calif., officials are considering an upgrade in the status of pet owners.

The animal lovers would be pet guardians, not merely owners. The county Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the issue Tuesday.

Officials saying being called a pet guardian should get people to be more responsible with their furry friends. The measure would change all references in county legal documents, but would not change any of the owners' responsibilities.

San Francisco, Berkeley, and the State of Rhode Island have passed similar laws.

wouldn't that mean that they can be confiscated at any time without reason.
Since they are no longer going to be considered property????

It sounds like a fun, cooky thing they are doing just to be cute, but I thought along the same lines as b dog when I read the article. "What is their agenda" there is a reason for them doing this I believe, I'd be very intrested in seeing where this ends up in 2-3 years...if it is used against them in any way.

I agree, this will lead to all sorts of problems if passed. You will lose ALL your rights pertaining to your animals.

Ownership=yours beyond dispute till death do you part.

Guardianship=yours as long as they(anyone but you) allow it. A.K.A temporary

Man, this world is going to shite, rules coming out of our ying yang, and now they want to take away our rights as animal owners. Get over it already, you live, you die, end of story....why must people complicate things.

It's almost as good as your parrental rights are in this country.....FREAKING AR WACKOS!!!

Edit: Sounds good to most of the pet population, till they are directly affected.
