Lethbridge Couple Start Pit Bull Adoption Agency
April 22, 2006 | 7:40pm

Pit bulls don't have a lot of friends or supporters these days. They're known for their vicious and often unprovoked attacks. But one Lethbridge couple, who feel the dogs are just misunderstood, have set up an adoption centre to find pit bulls good homes. Tyler Brownfield says he realizes how aggressive his two pit bulls can be.

"If another dog started a fight this one might finish it."

But he and his wife Shannon aren’t worried. In fact, they believe these “bully” dogs can actually make great pets. They have now opened their doors to many more by starting an adoption organization called Bridge City Bullies.

"It's portrayed all the time that they're such bad dogs and they do so many evil things, but they're great dogs, they love people. It's just a few instances that are getting blown up."

Brownfield believes that responsibility for a dog's actions rest with it's owner. He says pit bulls need more attention than any other because they're naturally more aggressive. Treat them like he does, and the dogs shouldn’t be any trouble.

"Oh they're clowns, they love to play, they're very social," said Shannon Brownfield. She says her dogs, just like any others, have their own unique personalities.

Tyler Brownfield works at the Lethbridge humane society and sees first-hand the reaction people have to pit bulls.

"They're like, what kind of dog is that, and it's like, it's a pit bull and they're like, ohhhh…..."

That’s the kind of image the Brownfields are trying to erase, in the hopes that no “bully” dog will have to be euthanized just because of its breed.
