Supervisors Vote To Order Dogs Spayed or Neutered

By Shawn McGinnis, KTLA News

April 18, 2006, 9:53 PM PDT

If you're a dog owner living in an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County, you will soon be required to get your pet spayed or neutered at 4 months of age.

That's if a new ordinance tentatively approved today by the Board of Supervisors gets final approval.

The ordinance would apply to all breeds, but excludes animals that compete in dog shows, work with law enforcement or assist the disabled.

The measure would also require dogs to have a microchip implanted under the skin to identify a pet in the event it runs away and ends up at an animal shelter.

And that's not all. Dog license fees will also increase under the ordinance. Fees for a dog that has been spayed or neutered dog will jump from $15 to $20, while licenses for unaltered dogs will double to $60.

If the measure gets final approval as expected, it will go into effect on June 2.

LA County passed their mandatory spay and neuter law yesterday, according to
the President of the California Federation of Dog Clubs who called us before
and after she was interviewed on TV. We were told it passed apx 2:20 pm
April 18th 2006.

LA Animal Control is claiming they need 14 more AC officers to enforce the
new law. They can't even enforce their existing laws and they now seem more
concerned about extermination of dogs than protecting the public, also the
buzz in LA County is the new law will reduce aggressive dogs !

ACF is going to amend LA County to our federal complaint, even though LA
County's new law is not breed specific it does fall under SB861 and its
going to target specific breeds. It would of not come about if not for
SB861. LA County's law shows that SB861 is causing irrational law
enforcement of regulation and control of dogs.

ACF has been receiving support to fight SB861 and we thank everyone !!!!!

as a footnote, I just read a story from someone who attended that meeting, and stated how few supporters there were on behalf of our breed.
I can't even STRESS how important it is to be there and represent this breedin a positive light. If people don't continue to stand up for them, pretty soon, there will be none left to stand up for....:(

I am just about fed up with BSL in CA! Last week I was harrassed by AC&C just because I have Pit Bulls! I spoke to the ACO's supervisor and she is now on suspension. I just might try talking my boyfriend into wanting to move to MD near his family to get away from this crap! ((hopefully there is no BSL in MD, I'll have to look into that.))

nothing in MD!
Thank God. Maybe I can live in sanity and not have to worry about losing my dogs every other day due to their breed...I probably won't move unless something serious happens, but it's good to know I have somewhere to go if anything changes. I couldn't imagine my life without this wonderful breed. :) It just seems like everywhere you go they are trying to exterminate them!
