In Marion County, if you don't vaccinate your dog or cat you could be fined or sent to jail.

Animal regulations are a "norm" in most areas....but not in Marion County, until now. A new animal control ordinance there requires owners to vaccinate your pet against rabies. And now all female dogs in heat cannot run loose.

Peggy Woolam runs Claws and Paws rescue group in Marion County. She's taken in twenty eight strays just this year. And with the growth the county is experiencing, she only sees the problem getting worse.

"The ordinance will have to be enhanced, very definitely cause as people come there will be more animals." said Woolam.

The new ordinance requires rabies vaccinations and dogs in heat be kept fenced in. In Buena Vista, the city began controlling their pets over ten years ago. Now its animal control officer says he gets ten to fifteen calls a week.

"Every now and then you'll see one but I know whose they is and I go get them and carry them home." said Danny Singleton, Buena Vista Animal Control Officer

But Buena Vista also has a leash law. Something Peggy Woolam doesn't expect in the county for some time.

"Everybody has an address instead of being a rural route and then there will be subdivisions coming and with subdivisions there's going to be a leash laws." said Woolam.

But where do you put the strays once you catch them. There is no animal shelter in Marion County. Buena Vista takes them to a vet in Cusseta who tries to find new owners. And with growth, it's a problem animal lovers say should be fixed.

Claws and Paws is currently looking for help in getting a shelter off the ground in Marion County. If you'd like to help you can call them at 229-649-5224.
