FIRESTONE, Colo. -- A 2-year-old boy is suffering from significant facial injuries after he was mauled by his family's guard dog Wednesday morning, the Weld County Sheriff's Office said.
Damien Winter was transported to Children's Hospital. His condition has not been released, but authorities said his most severe injuries are to his forehead.
The boy was playing outside his home on an enclosed porch when he was bitten in the face by the family's 9-year-old rottweiler-chow mix. His mother, Shanon Winter, called 911 at 10:35 a.m. and emergency personnel arrived at their home, located on County Road 15, shortly thereafter. The boy was transported to Children's Hospital by ambulance.
The boy's grandmother and 12-year-old sibling were also home but neither was outside when the attack occurred. Investigators are trying to figure out what prompted the attack.
The family has turned the dog over to Weld County Animal Control.
"The Sheriff’s Office has had one previous call to the residence reference this dog," said Undersheriff Margie Martinez. "No criminal charges have been filed at this time."
