Cottonseed is deadly
My USDA inspector and a veterinarian lost 4 livestock guardian dogs in a short amount of time. Necropsy said cardiac failure but 2 of the dogs were under a year old. Since she is a vet she would not let it drop. She did research and found a pathologist is AK that figured it out. Try as she might she tried to keep the dogs out of the goat feed but dogs will be dogs and sometimes they ate with the goats. The goat feed she used was AACO DairyLac at 20%. It has cottonseed in it which some cattle feed also has. Cottonseed up's the protein content. Cottonseed contains a chemical called "Gossypol". If consumed chronically by dogs it will cause cardiac failure. Without suing them she is trying force the feed company to put warning labels on all bags where cottonseed has been added to feed. But she isn't having much luck. It dawned on me that lots of animals eat goat food. I feed it to my llama. She was smart enough to ask the company if this chemical was in the feed. They said
no. They lied. So be ware. If you have dogs that could get in your livestock feed, and it has even a tiny amount of cottonseed in it, your dog could die and you won't know why. By the way, horse feed does not have cottonseed in it.
mia~i found this on the goat forum i run, is there any truth to this?? my dogs sneak bites from the goats at feed time. so i need to know what ya'll think about this!!!
