A breed of dog that some consider dangerous is no longer welcome in the city of Salina.

The Salina City Commission approved an ordinance banning pit bulls.

Pit bull owners must now follow strict rules after the City Commission gives final approval to an ordinance banning the breed.

Debbie Corrales loves her pit bull puppy Peanut.

"He's very obedient, he's very caring." says Debbie. "He sits in a swing in the park and will let you swing him for 20 to 30 minutes."

Now, Debbie will have to follow strict rules in order to keep her dog. The Salina City Commission voted 4 to 1 to ban pit bulls.

The new rules come after 3-year-old Caitlyn Forsberg was brutally attacked by two pit bulls in May.

Caitlyn's doing better, but she still has scars on the outside, and also on the inside.

Caitlyn's father Ryan Forsberg says, "She's shy around people she doesn't know now and she's shy around other dogs and she never used to be like that."

Another child was also attacked by a pit bull this past weekend. Her injuries were less severe than Caitlyn's. But Ryan says he hopes this ban will prevent further attacks.

"It's something that shouldn't have to happen to anybody." Ryan says.

Current pit bull owners will have to get a special permit to keep their dogs. The dogs will also have to be contained, something Debbie will follow even though she doesn't like it.

"I have an issue with the pen." says Debbie. "I think my dogs should be able to run free in the yard if I have a six foot fence."

The ban takes effect on August 1st. The city will send out special packets about the new rules to dog owners in the coming weeks.
