Okay, here is a theoretical question for all those with experience. Say you have your proven female, she is of breeding age and has passed all your requirments to be bred. You have two males in mind to choose from. The first is a conformation CH and weight pull ACE, but his ped varies from hers greatly, maybe a few common ancestors in the 4th gen and back. The second is really not the best looking dog, but is a working dog and his ped matches up with her real nice, lots of common ancestors in the 2nd gen and back. Which dog would you choose? Do you take the better looking dog, or do you take the "not-so-pretty" working dog?
P.S. No breeding plans for me, I have just always been curious about this particular question.

the not so pretty working dog!!! the dog matches up well with her, and is a good bulldog - dont matter how he looks.
hell, its usually the ugly ones that make the best bulldogs!! LOL

But, what if you want a conf. Ch. I should have added that in there. What if there are no future hunting plans for your dog, would you still go this route?

The game dog. You show your working dogs, you dont breed your working dogs for the show!

I have a buddy who breeds for looks similar to what you are describing and throughout his yard you can find various problems from genetic defects to man-biters, I purchased my male from a gentleman who breeds game breed dogs and my dog is sound mentally/ physically and is the best dog I have ever owned, there is no way around it. Dogmen worked hard to develop a breed that meet certain standards for a reason and we should keep it that way.

go with the best dog...after all it is a dog that makes the ped not the other way around. unless of course you are breeding for pretty peds

Go with the the one with the close ped.......if they have the same ansestors, than that would meen that they could both produce champions.....the dog might not be pretty to some jurk judge in the AKC, or UKC, but that is not what this breed is about. They were breed to work in the >>>. The ADBA will show and CH a dog that looks good (Conditioning wise) they dont care if the dog is "so to speak" ugly. They care if the dog is conditioned to the way it should be. They dont prance around the ring, they simply look and judge on what the winner should be. Keep the lines tight. that is just IMO.Okay, here is a theoretical question for all those with experience. jmho, both dogs sound like you should not breed to her or use the female for the reasons you give.don't mix the game dog with the pull dog and don't breed the other dog just because of the peds.
but if i had to it would be the close ped dog and i would keep all of them cull hard

It depends on what you are breeding for, but I most definately would choose working ability over conformation. If you know what you want in a dog, a very well built working dog looks much better to the eye than a dog for "conformation standards"
AND if you are a doberman lover like me you might eventually become disgusted with what is considered "show" quality because it causes the dog to become more physically weak and prone to various health issues.

Because of this thread, some one left me this comment:
You don't breed for looks. But taking into consideration who you bought your dogs from (one of the biggest BYB in FL), your post doesn't suprise me.
Just curious as to who it could have been. Why don't you leave your name, or perhaps PM me and we can discuss this further. I have only bought 2 dogs in the last few years and both I consider from reputable breeders. Would like to know the dogs you have and who you are buying yours from. As far as breeding for looks, I don't, and that was not the reason for the post. I was just trying to post what I thought would be an interesting topic (maybe get some debate going) and hear from those with an opinion on the matter. Obviously there was no debating with this topic, but everyone said thier piece with some politeness. Maybe you could do the same.
