Does anyone know where to start on how to get a dog shipped or how to ship a dog. I have never shipped a dog before so I am not sure how. Also, I am looking to purchase a male who needs to be shipped from Brownwood, TX to Lincolnton, NC and Im not sure what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

well what i would do is ask the breeder how does he usally ship dogs because some folks use the airlines wich is the most common way or some use transporters wich can be a person or a company so what i would do is ask him first then go from there.

We usually use American Airlines and have for years and never had a problem. You can call them direct at 800-736-3095 (Animal Cargo). Depending on where the puppy is being shipped, you may be able to ship it freight collect. To do this the final destination will have to be an American Airlines cargo terminal. Otherwise, you will have to prepay the shipping. Shipping across the states runs about $181 presently. This time of year there are no weather embargos (too hot or too cold to transport an animal). The pup will require a health certificate signed by a vet and dated no more than 10 days prior to shipment. Reservations can only be made three days in advance through American Airlines.
We have also used Northwest Airlines and Air Canada without any problems.
Hope this helps.........JMAN

A year ago I used alaska airlines, to ship a 35lb puppy neo mastiff , from Az to San Diego, Ca, they charged me only $100.00 tax incl.

There are several companies that make all the shipping arrangements for you, but they charge a fortune and are hardly worth the money. A few of them don't allow shipping Pit Bulls over six months old because "they're too aggressive" or "they can chew throught the kennel". That's what one place told me anyway. As far as most airlines go, you pay a certain fee depending on how heavy the dog is. Say $150 for a dog up to 25 lbs, $250 for a dog up to 50 lbs and so on. They also have restrictions based on what size kennel the dog is in. For example, I wanted to have my 2 y.o. male shipped to me on AA from California, and he would require a 500 series kennel, so I would have had to pick him up in Dallas since American does not fly larger planes into the Tulsa airport and the 500 and 700 kennels are not allowed on smaller planes. It just depends on the kennel size, airport, and weight of the dog and kennel together. Airfare for Aaron would have been $475. Your best bet would be to call the airlines to find out what they charge. You'll need a "clean bill of health" from the vet no more than 10 days prior to departure, and you'll have to know his weight and what size kennel he needs. Any airline will have their rules on flying pets on the website, but I find it's much easier to get the answers you need by calling them directly. I found that AA is really the cheapest and you can find their info at http://www.aacargo.com/shipping/animals.jhtml.
Hope that helps!

I've never shipped a dog, or had one shipped here but if I was going to I would defintely shy away from airline shipping, and just get in touch with a ground transport. This way the dog gets let out to eliminate every couple hours, and handled instead of being shoved in a crate and thrown in the back of a dark plane.
