Is anyone on this forum a licensed Vet or on their way to this? I am thinking about attending a College of Veterinary Medicine, and am wondering a little about what to expect, a time frame of completion, what kind of financial stability there may be, or anything else. I currently make rounds to peoples home when they call me up, and when I can help, cure, or improve their APBT's health or condition, it gives me this feeling of accomplishment and worth like I've never felt before. I'd like to know more about the profession if anyone here can give any info about it. Thanks in advance for any input you may give.

So you only did two years? Is this for a vet tech or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine?

its for vet tech but theres another program that works with this that allows you to work with medicines but to be official you have to get another degree plan for that

First do you have a Bachelors Degree in Biology or have the appropriate requirements for the Vet school you are looking to apply to? Vet. Schools are A LOT harder to get into compared to Medical School. They are also more demanding and you aren't just going to learn about dogs and cats. You need at least 500 hours of experience in a small and/or large animal practice before sending your application in. Your best shot is to apply to as many schools as possible and plan on spending at least $1000 total for applications.
You are also looking at a pretty good financial investment like maybe around $100,000 just for Vet school if you are an Out of State Resident. Thats tuition and living expenses and interest. This might seem like a lot but most schools charge like 20-30,000 for out of state tuition.
This is just some general basic information.

This sounds crazy, but there is a vet in my area that let's you have hand-on training for vet assist if you are interested. He rarely has openings though.

Actually, Im on my way towards mechanical/electrical engineering...and have had some motivation lately to reconsider, and the vet thing has been buggin me for a while now. Thanks for the info. I know I have alot more work and school to do before I can even really take the idea too seriously, but that little info helped out some. thanks.

Your better off staying with engineering. Honestly. Keep dogs as your interest.

You have to go to regular school before you can apply to vet school. Go to a regular school with pre-vet or just major in Bio. Then if your grades are good enough you apply for vet school. I was a pre-vet major in college for 2.5 years untill I learned that a 3.4 GPA isn't good enough to get into vet school. Hope this helps

Iverson - are you active duty military or a military dependant?

When you come back stateside, what is your home of record?

You can PM me if you'd like.

The reason I ask is that there are a lot of education programs out there for military veterans and some states have really good tuition assistance programs for those that served.

I have volunteered with the VA for over 15 years and have access to alot of that info. I would be happy to look it up for you and tell you what you could be eligable for and how to get it.

Check with your state's Dept of Education to see if they have TA. I found out after the fact that MI didn't and IL does and I was mad. TX also does.
