San Francisco,CA -- This is a forwarded email from a pitbull email list.
Officer in Fresno shoots loose family dog. Vets deny treatment to dying dog because it was shot by an officer of the law. http://www.indybay.org/uploads/1900spitbullwgirls.jpg
I want to get this story out.

On Wednesday, March 15 Our beloved family member was shot by a police
officer. This officer had a car pulled over at the end of the driveway
at my brothers house. I opened the front door and he ran out. As I
realized that the police officer had a gun drawn, i called my dogs
name. (Now my dog is 100% obedient I take him everywhere with me.)As
his feet skidded to a stop, I heard the shot, he was shot between the
eyes. Gizmo was knocked down and got back up took a few more steps and
fell over. as i ran to him, the gun was pointed at me. the officer was
on the oppisite side of the car when he shot my dog. If my dog was
going to do harm, (wich he would never) the officer was in no danger
as the car was in between him. the man saw a pit bull and shot him.

After 25 minutes the officer finnally allowed me to take my pet to
the vet and i was refused service at two vet hospitals because it was
a police shooting. when i finnally found a vet that would take him i
had to have him put to sleep because he was in so much agony. this has
left me scarred for life, and my 9 year old niece who witnessed it
all. had my best friend been a poodle he would be alive today. PLEASE
HELP ME PLEASE WRITE CALL OR E- MAIL FRESNO CALIFORNIA'S MAYOR OR SOME
COUNTY OFFICIAL.

I cannot even imagine going through this. What a horrible thing to have happen. I would not stop until something was done to this cop for his actions.

How sad and disgusted to read the above news. I have wrote the Mayor an email stating my extreme dissapointment.

Let's all write into the link- and let him know that this was down right wrong for them to do and think they can get away with it...

MY LAST WORDS ON THIS...... SUE THEIR ASSES!!!!!!!!

Hate to hear stuff like that. I think it was in Oakland that BadRap had a demo dog who was CGC/TDI that was involved in a similar situation except that the cop in this case missed. He fired his gun with people and children nearby. Scary and infuriating.

Whenever I'm out walking with my dog if I run into a cop and get the chance I introduce my dog and let the cop pet him and give my "Pitbulls can be great dogs" rap to them. A lot of cops in larger citys have seen a lot of Pitbulls that have been turned into fearbiters by abusive/crimminal owners. So I try to counter some of that.

An officer is told to shoot, if charged upon. It's endangering an officers life, or as we call it, likely-hood. If shot by an officer, without knowing all facts, some vets will not submit treatment. That's a big shame, that it happened at all. That poor dog, not to talk about the person who had to witness it. I'm going to write an e-mail & see if what I say, might help them some. I'll let a couple senators know, I work with, on this kind of stuff. They'll send in theire-mails too.

I know of someone who's pit bull was shot in front of the family (with several children) by a cop because the dog got off the couch. I've heard several stories of dogs shot by cops for no reason.

But I can not believe the dog was denied veterinary attention! That is insane, can we get the e-mail addresses of these hospitals as well? There is no reason to deny treatment! That is the purpose of the hospital. That is there job. That is far worse to me than the shooting itself which is horrible in itself. I'm very sorry for this family.

The sad thing is, stories like this happen all the time. It may sound insensitive, but it was so avoidable. When I go to my door, I make sure my dogs are behind me. And they know they have to sit before I let them into the yard. (People think I'm a tyrant, but IMO, a little extra control never hurt anybody in dealing with these dogs.)

We were in a nice little car accident Saturday night. We had both dogs in the car with us. The idiot who hit us ran, and we had to chase him and use the horn and highbeams to attract the attention of a cop. Long story short, we ended up waiting parked under a bridge for over an hour while cops were all over the place, questioning us and the other guy. Everytime I had to get out of the car, I rolled my windows back up. Just because I knew that if my dog decided to hop out and investigate, in friendliness or not, she probably would've had a bunch of guns pointed at her, and it was just not worth the risk.

I'm not defending what the officer did. And I find not treating a dog because it was shot by a cop reprehensible. (I wonder if there is some sort of law in CA that outlines that.) But people do sic their dogs on police, and right or not, our breed is synonymous with drug dealers and low-lifes. It is irresponsible to allow a Pit Bull to run out the front door at a cop. That's poor management. Still, I hope they are able to get some closure in this. (Beat me if you must, but its what I believe.)
