Burns: Pity the poor pit bull

Dog bites man isn't news - or so goes the old journalistic axiom. The exception to that rule is the pit bull.
"Years ago it was the German shepherd, then it was the Doberman, then it was the Rottweiler, now it's the pit bull," said Barnstable animal control officer Charlie Lewis, of the breed's reputation.
Lewis and Yarmouth animal control officer Penny Schiller both said pit bulls present no more of problem in their towns than do other dogs. But that's not how the dog is perceived by many, who see it as 50 pounds of muscle with jaws that lock on to a leg like a lawyer on a malpractice suit. http://news.bostonherald.com/siteImages/advertisement4.gif

Many insurance companies will not provide home insurance to people who own pit bulls, as is the case with a number of other dogs that are considered risky. Pit bulls have been banned in Denver. Detroit came close to banning them too.
Here on Cape Cod we've had our share of pit bull incidents. Last October a dog was euthanized after two attacks on humans. That same month two other pit bulls attacked a woman walking in West Dennis. The year before that a boxer-pit bull mix was given a reprieve by Brewster selectman who had earlier ordered him destroyed following numerous complaints.
Most recently a pit bull was ordered out of town by Dennis selectmen, following complaints that the dog had been running loose and creating a nuisance. This past week pit bulls were even blamed for starting a fire in a West Yarmouth home. What next: Car jacking? Dealing crack in the schoolyards?
Why can't these dogs be more like Champion Rocky Top's Sundance Kid, the dog that won Best in Show this year at the Westminster Kennel Club event. Truth is they can be, and often are. The Champ is a bull terrier, and the difference between a bull terrier and a pit bull is the difference between a cul-de-sac and a dead end street. One may sound better than the other, but they're still the same animal. At least that's how Denver sees it.
The Denver city ordinance defines pit bulls as "any dog that is an American pit bull terrier, an American Staffordshire terrier, a Staffordshire bull terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one or more of these breeds."
