I am posting this for a friend. He has a dog that stays in the house and the dog always has an odor. No matter how many times or what he uses to bathe the dog, 2 days later the dog will smell. Breath and body odor. I have no answer for him all my dogs are on the chain. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i'm am no vet, but my experience with this condition with about 5 different dogs is that there is a skin problem, be it Staph, Mange, or some other dermatitus. i could be wrong, but for me, everytime this happened, it came down to something wrong in the skin dept. dont know how it affects the breath, but it did. there must be something else underlying we dont know about or very few know of thats internal.

First off, overbathing is a bad thing, it strips the skin of essential oils and can cause a dry, flakey coat.
Second, he's a dog. They can stink. What is your friend feeding? I used to feed Nutro, and my dogs did have a bit of bad breath and body odor. When I switched to Canidae/raw food, the smell almost disapeared. No, they don't smell like daisies, but they don't smell like dumpsters either. If he only has one or a few dogs, and knows what he's doing, why not switch his dogs over to a completely raw diet? I've heard that it almost compltely cuts down on odor, as well as improving the overall health of the dog.
There are "Cainine Colognes" and sprays one can use, but they generally just make a stinky dog smell worse. A good deodorizing shampoo can help, I've also heard baking soda can be used to help, although I'm not to sure about that.

Baking Soda brushed trhough the fur seems to work like a dry bath.

Auggie has a good point, have your friend take his dog to a vet for a skin scrape to see if there are any underlying health problems, such as a staph infection. I doubt it's mange, since you didn't mention hair loss, but you never know.

There are also a few other conditions that can cause the body odor and bad breath such a a thyroid problem or diabetes.

This dog more than likely has a very treatable medical condition. A good diet that is easy to digest may help too.

Yeha, I agree. A skin scrape/blood work is needed. My GSD bitch smelles pretty bad and she had gone into kidney failure. Mind you there was other symptoms too, but I knew whenever her kidneys were not doing well by her breath and skin smell.
I had a dog like that. She'd have a strong "doggy" odor about her. I'd bathe her & it'd go away, but after a few days it'd be right back. Her skin & hair coat was in good condition. I took her to the vet & she told me some dogs just have a stronger body odor.
