Hey everyone.

My husband and I first started out with Little, our 4 year old Red nosed pit. She is rescued and the only survior out of a litter of I belive, 12 or so pups and mom and dad pit. Yes she has her ups and downs, but what is expected of a dog with a such a hard past, we got her when she was about 5 months old. We have never had any problems with her except the scrabble between our, at the time 10 week old pup. Her and the pup got a little to rough and somehow in the mix the pups lower jaw broke. Jay ( our youngest pit ) is now 7 months old. They get along just fine, they do have thier moments when they get tierd of one another, but they walk away and take thier breaks from each other.

Recently Little has been barking at all hours of the night for no apparent reason, well twice I have went our side because she is eating something, and come to find out it is pig ears, and someone has been tossing them over our fence i guess has a peice offering to get her to stop barking. Well this poses a problem with us, Little has choked a couple times on them and we never just give little a treat and not jay because then we have fighting issues over the food. And we never give them treats that they can choke on unless we are home just for thier saftey..they are they our kids.

Well last weekend, my husband found a blue ball in our yard that isnt ours, and this morning our front gate was wide open and I think our poor UPS guy had a heart attack when our dogs met him at the front yard. We keep a lock on our gates at all time so we prevent any thing from happening, you all know the rep of a pit.

So with this not being the first time i called our local animal control to ask for advise and to my surprise he said that without us seeing anyone opening our gate or giving them things over the fence that we cant do anything. He also informed me that if someone comes into our yard with out an intent to do harm or steel from us and the dogs bite them its our faults.

I dont see how it would be our faults if we do not know the person , and they come into our yards with out us being home and with signs and locks being on the fence? He said all they would have to do is say they thought a friend lived where we leave.

Then he threw in that there has been 4 pit attacks in our area in the past couple weeks and that the city is considering banning pits from the area!!!!! THis pissed me off. And come to find out that most of this attacts were second offence...so why wasnt something done the first time it happened.

There has never been a doubt in our minds what our dogs are able to do if there were to attack, but even the first sign of them doing so we would have them put down, I mean we have a 4 year old and 7 month old son and we would never put them in danger.

ANother thing he told me was if someone says they feel theatened while we are walking our dogs or they are walking by our house then the city can take action against it.

I feel we are being singled out here! I know they are always problems with pits but i mean Little was attacked by a jack russle the first week we had her! the damn thing acted like it was going to kill her and what did she do, walk to the car! And i have been chased by chi wa was and weenie dogs more than once in my child hood, and what did that do about that...nothing!!!!!

Well i think i have said all that wason my chest.....any suggestions, or does anyone know the rules!!!

anything will help!

thanks
stefanie

Thats the downfall of owning this great breed. We are immediately judged the same as our dog of choice is. I would put up no trespassing signs and "Dog on premises" signs. Also, I would make a thorough sweep of the yard everyday before letting them out, a common cause of poisioning is injecting or dipping a tasty treat in something like antifreeze and tossing it over the fence.
