This is a little piece of my mind that I sent into out local newspaper due to the horrible media on our very loved breed. They are not banning the breed in California, but in Fresno they are requiring spay and neuter laws. They are also going to be collecting a yearly fee for just owning a Pit Bull.

Well this is what I had to say.

This is a letter to explain the truth about Pit Bulls and try to help others not hate this breed. The truth is that the breed gets a bad name due to the lack of responsible ownership. Pit Bulls are naturally people friendly dogs and that is why they should not be used as attack dogs or as guard dogs, this only creates a false impression of humans in the dog’s mind. Yes, they have a sad history of being involved in dog fights and bull baiting, but that is history. Some ignorant people still insist on having dog fights and corrupting this poor breed’s offspring. The truth is that the Pit Bull is one of the strongest, if not the strongest dog and is to be handled responsibly. This breed also tends to be sold at a cheaper price due to irresponsible breeding and over-breeding. This leads to the breed, once again, being handed to irresponsible owners who will place the dog in an insufficient lifestyle. As far as Pit Bull attacks, did you know that if the dog even resembles a pit bull type dog it is recorded as a ”Pit Bull” attack. It creates an injustice since there are many other mixed breeds that resemble the Pit Bull. Approximating 20 deaths per year in a dog population of 53 million yields an infinitesimal percent of the dog population (.0000004%) involved in a human fatality. (http://www.fataldogattacks.com) More people are likely to be killed by a lightening strike than a dog attack. If the Pit Bull was outlawed this would lead to more irresponsible owners selling them on the black market and holding dog fights. This creates a more corrupt breed and fearful public. The truth of the matter is: responsible owners are paying the price for irresponsible owners. I am not sure about you, but I would not like to be grouped in with individuals committing crimes just because of the way I look. Talk about discrimination at its best!
