Four days later, another dog disappeared from the animal shelter. Now police said they've got the thief behind bars.
"As a result of leads developed, we arrested Michael Sumner of Cohoes," said Menands Police Chief Michael O'Brien.
Police said 17-year-old Sumner broke into the animal shelter on the night of January 19, and stole a two-year-old female pit bull.
"He used some kind of cutting tool to cut the locks on the gate," said Chief O’Brien.
Then police said Sumner went back for more, but this time during the day. Shelter employees said Sumner claimed to own one of their pit bulls, and demanded it be handed over to him. But the staff wouldn't budge without proof of ownership.

Shelter Manager Cydney Cross said, "He identified a dog. We took his name, address and phone number, and then that night, sometime between the closing of the shelter and when the staff got here in the morning, that dog was stolen.”
The investigation led police to the City of Rensselaer where they eventually recovered both dogs, but said they found one of them in bad shape.
Chief O’Brien said, "It had bite injuries resulting from a dog fight."
"He had enough injuries that sadly we had to put him down," said Cross.

Police said Sumner may have entered the pit bull into an illegal dog fight, or O'Brien said, "The dog may have just encountered another dog on the street."
Police hope to find the answer soon. The other dog was returned safely to the shelter while Sumner was sent to Albany County Jail. He's due in court next week.
