I was just looking at my girlfriends pup, and I noticed it has dewclaws on its back legs. Is this normal?

talk with your vet ... If the dog is a show dog, yes.. but usually they cut them off within days of whelping
other than that, they shouldnt harm anything

I have one thats about 6 months. He has one on one of his back legs. The reson though is that he is a very line bred dog.Mine is a Homer bred APBT.
I've seen a few with back dew claws.

Dogs dont think of it as "nasty" and "inbreeding" in dogs is much diffrent from "inbreeding" in humans. With the proper culling program inbreeding is a succesful tool in a breeding program. However, if you dont cull properly or breed them too tight, genetic defects will surface from the line.

Wait.. Didnt you just say if a pit bull is pure it wont have dew claws?? Rear dew claws will happen.. its rare but it does happen even in pure pit bulls. What genetic material are you reading?
It happens more often however in the Staffordshire Bull terrier as their standards says to remove rear dewclaws if present..

No.. front dewclaws are natural. Someone mentioned that if the dog has dewclaws on the rear legs its not a pure bred pit bull ..
Dewclaws on the front can be removed if wanted..but honestly, theres no reason to remove them.

i would have the ones on the back taken off. Those are pretty much just skin w/a nail. They tend to snag on things, and can rip off causing more of a problem.

Savage, what you are stating is a myth...a rumor. In fact, there are just as many people who think that the sign of rear dewclaws is a sign that the dogs IS pure bred whatever. While not common in any breed, it does happen. It's called uncommon...rare....don't see it much....whatever. But to base a belief that an APBT isn't "pure" b/c it has rear dewclaws is as naive as to believe that "pure" APBTs can be determined if they have "locking jaws".
As for the
