A Klamath Falls man facing charges of animal abuse has given his 2-year-old pit bull, Kitty, to the Klamath Humane Society, the district attorney's office reported Friday.

Kitty has spent the past three weeks at the Klamath Humane Society, where she was taken after her owner, Richard A. Garcia, 21, was charged with beating her.

Garcia was arrested Jan. 3, after he claimed to friends that he had killed his pit bull while at their apartment on Dayton Street, authorities said. Witnesses found the injured dog and a wooden chair leg with blood on it in the garage of the apartment complex, court documents state.

The pit bull was taken by a friend to a local veterinary clinic, where she was treated for her injuries, and then released to the care of the humane society. The dog is taking antibiotics for damage to her jaw and teeth, according to JoAnne Carson, volunteer director of the local humane society, and otherwise is in good physical condition.

Officials are monitoring the animal for further psychological effects.

“Any time there's any kind of abuse to any living thing, I think psychological challenges are always there,” Carson said.

Humane Society officials have contacted a nationwide pit bull rescue organization, Pitbull Rescue Central, for help in placing Kitty in a permanent home. The Humane Society also is taking applications from those who may want to adopt Kitty. Carson said the goal is to find a compatible match and lifelong home for the pit bull.

Garcia forfeited the dog in response to a request made by Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb. If Garcia had denied Caleb's request, the district attorney planned to file a civil suit against the man to remove the animal from his care. Even if Garcia is found not guilty, he will never get the animal back, Caleb said.

Garcia's next court date is scheduled for Feb. 7.
