About 6 or so months ago, I was sitting out back on the patio about 11:30 p.m. w/ my son and Dixie. All of a sudden, we heard a loud noise, and this man had jumped my fence, and when he was over, he stopped and looked at Dixie and us w/ that "deer in the headlights look". The man had just robbed an occupied home, and had a loaded gun. This is like"unheard of" in our neighborhood to begin with, let alone a major shocker. Anyway, Dixie kinda "marched" over to my son and I, and stood her ground. She growled, and WATCHED this man,> I gues he realized what was going on, and took off jumping the back fence and leaving the yard. Dixie stood her ground, and I beleive she actually may have saved my son and I life that night. If she would have attacked, she would have most likely been shot. The man could have easily took my son and I hostage or something in that situation. I was and will always be proud.
Having said that, I have always had confidence in Dixie instincts. I have had confidence she is a "saty and fight if I have to to protect my family" and not a "flight" dog. Tonite, my son got his new drivers suit for racing. He was trying it on, black fire suit, pants and jacket, black neck brace, gloves and helmet, he came walking into the room, and Dixie went nuts. All of a sudden she let out this massive barking, that was all strung together like a scream almost and went after him. She did not bite him, despite I really thought she was gonna, she went after him and stood her ground barking at him and bullying him backwards to the wall.
Is this something I should worry about? She has never shown any human aggression what so ever in her life. he didn't look like a human per say, he looked more like a robot. When he yelled at her, she realized it was him and stopped, she even looked kinda embarassed. She didn't do it again when he tried it on for my parents who came over, she knew.

OK.. Dogs are color blind. The all black suit is what threw the dog off. Its the same reason why dogs bark /growl at police, postal workers and others who wear a dark colored uniform. You have to let her adjust to it. If a dog is raised around people in dark uniforms, they dont have that problem
Same with hats, people of different ethnicities.. they are different from what a dog normally sees and understands

Sounds like she was just startled. My pup acts like that when she sees something new. Nothing to worry about.

I figured it was the whole "non human" looking thing. All dark, helmet, giant neck brace... I guess she will get used to it, she looked so embarassed when he spoke.
Thanks, I understand what you mean!

Mmm...dogs aren't entirely colorblind. Humans have three types of cone cells: one for the recognition of blue color wavelengths, one for red, one for green. Dogs have two different cone cell types, allowing them to distinguish between shades of red/red-yellow and shades of blue, but they are unable to recognize green color wavelengths.

I always thought dogs didn't like animal control or police officers because they gave off a sense of power to the dogs. Hmmm never new it was their uniform. Even though Dozer likes cops.... When I put my boyfriend in jail hte cops came out with their guns and I was screaming they couldn't go in my house because they'd shot my dogs. I went in and opened the front door and got Dozer and Chyna but Halo wouldn't come because I seperated her from the other two in the kitchen. Dozer got away from me and walked two feet over to the cop and sat at his feet .. The cop actually pet him. Halo doesn't like anyone in a uniform but I doubt she'd bite someone. Sounds like your dog got surprised, mine do the same thing when I bring out the Halloween masks.

yes.. Iimply color blind meaning that they dont preceive colors as humans do..not nec only seeing in black and white.. but it is the lack of contrast in all dark clothing since dogs lack the ability to create a sharp visual image..their vision is based more off movement.. dogs are preced to have close around a 20/75 vision while a normal human has 20/20
approximately 10% of the photoreceptors in the cnertal area of the retina are cones, while in humands they have nearly 100% cones in that area.
the higher proportion of rods (which enable to see only black /white but are more sensitive to light) gives the dog improved vision in low light , The Tapetum Lucidum reflects light back through the retina (this layer also accounts for hte :demon glow" of a dogs eyes when hit with bright light) and is located on the upper half. The Tapetum nigrum is a nonreflective layer of dark pigmented cells and the arranement of these help enhance contrast in both visual planes.
humans lack tapetum lusicum but have a fovea, which dogs dont have (the fovea helps produice a sharp visual image) Dogs dont have the visual focus humans have. (due to the lower number of ganglia)
