I'm thinking about getting a treadmill for my boy. Should I go with a motorized treadmill or self propelled? What are some of the pros and cons of each? Please state whether you are talking from experience or word of mouth.

Speaking from experience you are just wasteing your time with a motorised mill..if you want something that will build the dog and give him a general good workout go for one of the numerous carpet mills about...in my op they are even better than the slate mills.because the slat mills seem a lot noisier and ya have the chance of dogs toes getting between rungs

Speaking from research, human treadmills are not well-fitted for canine conditioning. You should consider either Slat Mills or Carpet Mills.

Slat Mills are designed for aerobic exercise. They will improve your dog's wind and endurance. These mills have the disadvantage of being noisy (some sound like freight trains). Noise level depends on rollers used (in-line skate rollers being best).

Carpet Mills are designed for anaerobic exercise. It will improve your dog's strength and muscularity. The human must be careful not to overtrain the athlete as it is very easy to do while working this equipment.

i would go with the carpet mill. as long as it's a free spinning. remember to hand walk your dog after using the mill. then follow all that by showing your dog some love with a rub down

You need to decide on what you are trying to do before you invest in any mill. If you are trying to make your dog look all big & muscled up, but don't really care about putting any wind into them then go with a carpet mill. If you are trying to build win then use a slat mill. E mills can also be very beneficial & the human tredmills convert easily for canine use. However they require constant supervision, & may take a little longer to get the dog used too. If you have the money a slatmill is the best to get by far.

Lots of good advice all the way around. Thank you.
Well, I would like to build strength and muscle, since I have another way of building his wind. ;)

sy82nj- I have read about the walking and rub down afterwards as well. Thats good advice that I'm sure a lot of people overlook.

i have an electric mill and have success conditioning several dogs with it but some are also scared of it.... does anyone have any blueprints for building a carpet or slat mill?? i would like to have one of each for the diversity and to see for myself which has the best results on individual dog... thanks

Get a free turning slat mill from the Millmaker or from the Millwright.
Carpet mills are junk.
Burns the dogs feet up and and only works the rear legs.

Does nothing for long workouts and building wind.
They don't last as long.

This is why the top players like from Corvino to Carver used slat mills.
