Both sexes were used. A bitch often needed to prove herself just as worthy as the other dog.

Yeah, the dogs had to be proved on both sides to be bred, didnt they?
to make the best possibility of getting game pups.

were they always matched to the same sex?nope my favorite account had a female just destroying a male... made me feel good... talk about empowerment.... :D
Some use females but some don't. I once had a very knowledgable dogman tell me once that males were for hunting & females were for breeding. Others think that males are for hunting & females are ... well .. for hunting. I think there are doggers in both camps.
yeah id think that having proven dogs on both sides would be a plus. having a male that was everything you want and matching to a female just because she was pretty or such would be a waste of a good dog.

Working with animals I developed an opinion that bitches seem more dog aggressive to me than males. I had a bitch who killed my male the night I house sat for a friend. She was always messing with him and he was terrified of her before the end. She waited until I was gone and caught him by the tail and tore out his throat. I couldn't believe it, his tail was almost detatched from his body and his throat was wide open, there were no other marks on him. Sorry to be so graphic.
I decided not to keep her and when I discussed the issue with other animal people and I came to realize that this seemed almost typical of bitches. This is just my experience and all the stories I've heard so I can't speak for all. Ever since then I have observed that bitches seem like they don't take any bull.
Ky Pitbulls, do you know if they fight opposite sexes in your area, I don't see why it would matter if the weights match.

From a historical perspective, I've read in some old books written before the Animal Welfare Act of 1976, that some males will not fight a gyp. & sometimes a gyp won't fight a male. Besides that, irregardless of ability, what's to gain by facing an opponent of the opposite sex?

What's to gain? Wouldn't it be harder to prove a bitch's ability if there were only a handful of bitches to face-off with? Even in the handful of those, what if there were a bitch that was capable of winning against an extremely popular male, wouldn't the owner want to show that?

My point exactly. If you had the male what would it prove to beat a bitch? Or take a chance on losing to one? There's always going to be a certain stigma attached to male/female competition.
Dogs are matched at weight... not sex.

Oh, I didn't realize that some were sexist against dogs/bitches! Or so it seems, who cares so long as they are the same weight? So, were dogs and bitches not normally fought against eachother? I am very curious about this subject, because like I stated earlier, it is my experience that bitches are the ones to worry about more so than males in multi-canine households, so I would imagine there would be a similarity as far as competition. Of course you would need a smaller male against a larger female, but I'm sure there were many that could have matched-up.
Thank you B, I thought that made more sense.
I've seen yard accidents where a male has ran past 6 bitches to hit a male. I've carried gyps from chain spots in the back of a yard that where going crazy to get at every other female around them then could be walked past the male section of a yard. Dogs are still animals, & they are driven by the same preservation mentality of their wild ancestors. Not sexist, realist.

What dose gyp stand for? Can a dog be trained to go for or hit a certain spot like the genitals? If so that would mess up breeding program. To me that would be a good reason to use a female. I had herd of a man that a dog could be trained to do that. but thes man saying this stuff to make money, I think.and it was for illegal side of money.

2. Why in the hell would you leave 2 dog aggressive dogs alone together? It sounds like you knew beforehand what would happen & seem to be proud of the bitches "victory".
Just like in sports boys teams will play girls teams, so was the same in history with dogs.

1. I never mentioned anything about breeds.
2. I obviously was not thinking straight when I left the dogs alone and my friend asked me to house sit last minute. I most definately am NOT proud of one of my dogs killing the other and was not happy having to bury my male dog. I also was very unhappy having to get rid of my female. I am offended that you would think I was happy about this.

Why would it have to be a smaller male vs a larger female. Dispite popular Americna Beliefs....BIGGER IS NOT BETTER. And it doesn't mean "stronger, tougher, gamer, harder, healthier, happier, etc." How about this.....Bitches are more Violent. Mabye not more aggressive.

gyp is an unproven unbred female
bitch is a female that has been bred and whelped a litter

Besides that, irregardless of ability, what's to gain by facing an opponent of the opposite sex?well as far as i know SFK around here nothing is to be gained except money from fightin males agaisnt females, these's ppl around here are fools, that basically go buy these's byb pups raise them to fight and raise pups off them, nothing to be gained outta this to them cept money, But yes that fight males agaisnt females here.....now my bro, the last person he busted was catchin stray dogs male/female and would tie the strays mouths up and there front and back legs, and would let there pits practice on them stray dogs, very sad and stupid IMO

WRONG THEY ARE MATCHED BY WEIGHT AND SEX. ALTHOUGH VERY FEW DOG MEN DID MATCH SOME OPPOSITE SEXES BEFORE IT IS USUALLY FROWNED UPON.

I said larger females and smaller males because males are heavier and in order I am guessing that they would need a larger female to match weight with a male.
Yeah, not thinking straight at all, I knew my dogs were not getting along well and I was being stupid but I never would have expected that. Turns out I'm not the only one this has happened to and I don't need to own a dog like that even though I loved her and she was smart as heck. Gorgeous too.

I personally would frown upon matching males vs females. It does not matter that they weigh the same, they are of different genders. Sure they may be a few females that could whip a male straight up and there are others that would whip a male b/c the male is not "driven" against a possible (future) mate but why do this? FEMALE VS FEMALE and MALE VS MALE. All things considered to be fair/equal except gameness.
Riptora
01-20-2006, 10:21 AM
Yeah, it makes sense that it could be unfair because it might influence the dog's drive. I can see (after reading this) that it might be best not to match dogs and bitches, but were there as many females as males? I just think it would be hard to prove a bitch if the pickings were slim. I'm sure that most of these pit dogs do not give a crap what gender their opponents were, does anyone have any info on this? Did dogs refuse to scratch animals of opposite sex?
