I know a couple people who own a couple Pure "GAFF" dogs and I was wondering what you guys think about that bloodline and why you think what you think. I personally have know problems with them or heard any negative things about them but I could be wrong since I'm just a student trying to learn from the teachers. LOL

From what I hear there are some Amstaff breeders breeding these dogs for their standard....though I've yet come across one. Every single Gaff bloodline dog I've seen was a bluff being peddled off like it was stolen!

Gaff is pretty good- got a few champions on their yard- almost every dog is.

They farmed out a few dogs that are Champs as well.

I don't care for them. Mostly because they seem breed like crazy and let all their pups go out unaltered to be bred to whatever. A lot of those bighead blue breeders -- the kind that breed for nothing but head circumference -- have Gaff blood, which tells me that Gaff will sell a puppy to anybody and not care who they're bred to or where their offspring go. From what I've heard, Gaff also has some sketchy temperaments (fear issues, etc.) ***Ah, oops, scratch that part. There is more than one Gaff dog in the OFA database. I was looking under APBT, but most of them are AmStaffs.

I wouldn't mess with Gaff if I could avoid it.

For only $2,000 you can take your pic out of the 15 upcoming litters already on the ground & planned for the first half of the year. They're making a killing off those poorly bred innocent dogs. But hey, who wants to work themselves?

Some meet the AmStaff expectations (although just a few) but NONE of those dogs are APBTs. Just so you know.......

Gaff is a great show line of AmStaffs. they are not being passed off as APBTs so why are they being measured under the same stick?

The reason why it may resemble a Gotty/RE dog is beacuse RE built their foundation off of Gaff, York, and Knowlwood if I'm not mistaken. There are some Gaff dogs that do well in the AKC show ring as well as UKC. I really don't prefer the specific look of a Gaff dog but to me they are just typical AMSTAFFS/AKC type.

LOL. Thank you. ;) However, if you look at other kennels carrying on/breeding the Gaff name, you sill plainly see what I'm talking about. And only 2 breeding? It's only the 3rd week in Jan!

there maybe some good or soso breeders of this gaff line but non of them bred for performance of any kind and if they do prove it even if you can find a breeder they are questionable imo so i wouldnt use this lin if i were u
unless you breed into a real working line work these dogs dont have them just for a 100 breedings lmao!!

Gaff is a "good" show line of Staffs. If a "short, wide, bully" kennels has Gaff on their yard, its because they use it to "Clean up" their yard....to them....meaning that these conformation-correct dogs will put a little more acceptable looks back into the blood, so their dogs dont look straight bulldog/mastiff. I see it all the time. They are used majority of the time as outcrosses by your "bully" guys, while some have a following of dedicated 100% Gaff dogs. They are not big...owned them myself. Average weight between 55-65 lbs. There are a few exceptions...and of course, when others get ahold of dogs, they do their own thing with it. If you want a decent Show Staff, CONSIDER Gaff as one of your choices. If you like show types.....go to Nevada Kennels....they'll have better quality stuff. Here are some typical Gaff dogs.....

gaff is a great outcross line... assuming that its from good breedings. LIke any other line, there are bad gaff dogs out there too. Gaff is known for conformation quality animals... if you have a line that has faults you can outcross to a clean gaff dog and then reintroduce the original line for a "clean up". its a common and smart practice. People are too head up on keeping dogs 100% any one line, they sacrifice a dogs build and conformation to achieve this. I recommend Gaff all the time, they are a clean built line and very few conformational flaws are prevalent in it (there are always exceptions). Like with "gottiline" dogs... bad fronts (east/west feet, splayed toes, bowing, etc.) are common. Outcross to gaff and then reintroduce the "gottiline" and you get a more correct pup. but then you have a outcross dog and they dont like that... 100% gottiline sells for more money, forget about the quality of the dogs.

to each his own, but i respect a quality outcross, is shows that the breeder saw a weakness in his line and did something to improve it.

If a female is shedualed wjhat does it matter?
Plus both breedings took place last year- now pups on ground.

I think the point is:
2 breedings a year is a lot for any breeder, less know 2 at the same time and especially this early in the year, what do you think the odds are that they wont have another breeding this year?

so, are people who breed held to a "fiscal year" type of schedule? and their "number" of breedings start in Jan and end in Dec???

Ugh. I'm sorry I got this thread off track. God knows we cannot argue against bybs & puppy peddlers so let's get this thread back on track about Gaff dogs (& not breeding practices).

I've been around alot of "Gaff" dogs and some were different than the others. They all have this distinct look that lets you know there "Gaff" but some were different. I've seen athletic ones that weigh around eighty to eighty five pounds and I've seen smaller ones. By big I mean longer not wider but taller and longer. What I don't understand is when alot of people get a dog that is solid gray or blue they tend to breed them to be bigger can someone explain this to me please.

Actually I've notice some think with blacks ( blue before Dilute)
In a litter where there are red noses and blacks, the blacks come out bigger or more bulky- not overdone or anything just thicker.

I think some Gaff dogs look good and some make good show dogs. Unlike the RE, etc., dogs they are proportioned o.k. (the ones bred correctly). They are AmStaffs, so let's not compare them to APBT's.

Just noticed it in one litter - like you said- but then noticesblack/black brindles seem to be bigger than reds- just a thought that I was ponddering for a while and recently remembered.

To answer Pitbull200416's question, I think a lot of people with blue dogs breed them bigger to fill a demand. There are folks out there who want a big, wide, large-headed blue dog, so some breeders breed just for that. On the other hand, to use Hartagold for an example, she breeds primarily black dogs and gets blues sometimes, and her blue dogs are structured like her black dogs only a different color.

I think it all depends on the person behind the dogs. If they're breeding for standard, they'll get standard, no matter what the color is. But a lot of people who are attracted to blues right now don't want standard; they want extreme looks that will help them sell puppies to folks who think they're getting something unique.

I think its kind of sad, really. I was actually looking for a blue dog about 3 years ago when I was investigating APBT breeders. What I discovered is its very hard to find blue dogs being bred by a reputable breeder who breeds standard, athletic, regular-sized dogs that are health-tested, titled, and sold under contract. So I went with the color I've been fascinated by my whole life -- rednose/red. (Locked into reds for life now.)
