My daughter's ex-boyfriend recieved a pit puppy for Christmas from his new girlfriend. He's 25. The new girlfriend is 19. She paid $450 for this little baby. Neither of them have raised a dog, and they don't live together.
There are some very serious concerns here. First, my 17 month old grandbaby is allowed to visit him a lot, and I'm worried about ANY breed puppy with a toddler. However, I know NOTHING about this breed, just what I've heard (and I never believe everything I hear). I have five rescues (all different breeds) myself, so I am a dog nut.
This guy is borderline mentally retarded. He is a very nice person, but has no common sense, so we watch him with the baby very closely. Now he has an innocent pit bull baby too. She's around 10 weeks old.
He is not capable of understanding that she needs socialization.
And he works 12 hour days, so she'll be alone a lot.
So this adorable little dog will be alone for 12 hours, then alone while he sleeps for 6 more. And - forget about proper nutrition, training, or vet visits. I'm sick about it.
He won't give her up now, he's fallen in love with her.
Now you see the problem.

Here's my questions. I know any breed will be fearful and aggressive if they aren't socialized, but is this breed even more likely to be? Do I have to worry about the baby even more so with this particular breed?
And - if I volunteer to take the puppy a few hours a day, is there a way that I can somehow give her a good socialization foundation in only 2 months (I'm moving away this spring).
Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't sleep worrying about the baby and worrying about the puppy.
Thanks

Socialization or lack of isn’t going to cause a dog to become fearful and aggressive! Many dogs that are heavily socialized have those issues.

No, Chow’s, Shepard’s, Poodle’s, APBT’s, Yorkshire Terriers, etc are…canines, not a human’s babysitter! A child and dog should always be supervised and not because its “X” breed of canine.
