Although some Kansas towns are having trouble with pit bulls, those problems don't seem to be as severe as those in Salina.

Out of the nine dogs Salina animal control officers picked up Wednesday, five were pit bulls. As of Thursday, three of the dogs had been picked up by owners, said Rose Base, director of the Salina Animal Shelter.

Base said it's common to have several dogs of the same breed picked up at once, but since pit bulls recently have been in the spotlight in Salina, more people notice when several of them are found running loose.

"When we pick up five to six Beagles, no one calls to say anything," she said.

Danny Porter, shelter office manager, agreed.

"It might just be a fluke thing, I'm not sure what was going on," he said of the pit bull haul. "You never know what's going to be running loose."

However, in Abilene, whatever is running loose, it probably won't be pit bulls. About five or six years ago, the breed was banned from the city, said Police Chief Bryan Dunlap.

its not the pits that are the problem its the irresponsible owners who are at fault.
