Sudbury,ON, Canada -- Denise and Jeff Roberts love their Staffordshire bull terrier, and they have concerns about a law which bans the future breeding of this type of dog.

They are hosting a fundraiser, Chaulk it Up For Canine, this Saturday, Nov. 20, from noon to 1 pm at Rhythm and Cues.

Proceeds will be used to support the court challenge to the Dog Owner's Liability Act. The new law prohibits people from breeding, transferring,
abandoning or importing pit bulls. It also prohibits training these dogs for fighting.

Aside from a friendly pool tournament and silent auction, Dog Legislation Council of Canada executive members will be at the event to provide a quick presentation on Bill 132 and how it affects all dog owners.

Denise Roberts who has two children, aged three and five, calls the act, a knee jerk reaction...it's an illusion of security, it frightens me where it will go.

Banned-Aid Coalition, the national organization putting forth the challenge is comprised of five dog organizations that are working together to defeat breed specific legislation in Canada.

Cathy Prothro, who is directly involved with lawyer Clayton Ruby and his office, reported in an e-mail that the lawsuit has been filed with witnesses affidavits. The parties have met with the judge to determine a date for the hearing.

The Roberts believe the incidents that have inspired the legislation were caused by irresponsible dog owners.

As parents with small children and a dog, the Roberts teach their children how to behave with the dog, and the dogs have been socialized for family life, Denise said.

The new legislation requires them to muzzle their family pet when they take him for a daily walk around the neighbourhood.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Banned-Aid Coalition.
