When can you tell if your bitch has taken after breeding......

Hi there,

I bred my Stafford just under 4 weeks ago and was wondering when I should be able to see any developments if she is pregnant. I have known other breeders who say that they couldn't tell until 6 weeks or so but wanted your opinions.

We got 2 solid ties on day 11 and day 13 with a proven stud dog so were hopeful that she would take. She is more KC Type than working so has a wide chest etc, shes in good shape and carries no fat, should i have been able to see some changes by now? Her teats are slightly larger than usual I think (were already quite large from previous seasons), its more her behaviour thats changed so far, she is very clingy and always wants attention and needs to be sat on or near you etc. Her appetite remains good (although she lost it marginally a couple of weeks ago).

Any thoughts or previous experiences would be much appreciated.

to be sure you could take her for a scan around 6 weeks. if she has taken you will know how many pups to expect also.

The ultimate would be to take the scan around day 30 already.

You should start to see her tits drop some by now i did a breeding around the same time but i start to feed extra as soon as i have seen a tie or when i plan on breeding so its all ways a lil difficult to tell with my bitch

More often than not, you can't tell if a bitch is pregnant until 6 weeks. Sometimes later. A number of years back I bred a little 28lb bitch. I couldn't tell she was pregnant until 7weeks and then she had 9 pups. Don't waste your time and money on a scan. Patience is a virtue. You will know soon enough. My guess is, from what you describe, if she went off her feed a couple weeks back, she is pregnant. Good luck.

Thanks for all your replies. Was gunna get her scanned today but might stick with Ben's advice and wait. She is definately looking alot 'fuller' over the last 2-3 days and tits bigger again so fingers crossed.

Just a quick one to finish this off, my bitch has had slight vaginal discharge this week (2 nights), shes 5 weeks pregnant (i hope), its clear and odourless so I assume not to worry but wanna know your thoughts.
She was slightly sick yesterday but I think i overfed her, she has had no vomiting or diarrhea so far, but I have changed her food slightly (started feeding puppy food) so that could have also contributed. Am i still ok to feed raw meat and tripe (and puree'd veggies) along with the dried kibble?
